Historia
In The Darkening Age, Catherine Nixey tells the little-known - and deeply shocking - story of how a militant religion deliberately tried to extinguish the teachings of the Classical world, ushering in unquestioning adherence to the 'one true faith'. The Roman Empire had been generous in embracing and absorbing new creeds. But with the coming of Christianity, everything changed. This new faith, despite preaching peace, was violent, ruthless and intolerant. And once it became the religion of empire, its zealous adherents set about the destruction of the old gods.

The Original ISIS
Revisado: 02-08-19
Changes the way that we view the Dark Ages - from being one caused by the fall of the Roman empire to the result of freedom of thought, speech and pluralism being snuffed out by the evils of monotheism. Reading the reviews of this book it is only Christians taking umbrage giving negative reviews. At least these days they have been tempered by secularism and they can no longer burn us...

Historia
The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears.

A few people have criticised the performance of the reader and it nearly threw me off purchasing this book. I am glad I didn't. The book was amazing the story really made the era feel alive. As for the narrator - I listened at 1.45 speed and it sounded great.

Historia
A mere 18 years of age when his uncle, Julius Caesar, is murdered, Octavius Caesar prematurely inherits rule of the Roman Republic. Surrounded by men who are jockeying for power—Cicero, Brutus, Cassius, and Mark Antony—young Octavius must work against the powerful Roman political machinations to claim his destiny as first Roman emperor. Sprung from meticulous research and the pen of a true poet, Augustus tells the story of one man’s dream to liberate a corrupt Rome.

Wanted to finish, but the narration....
Revisado: 06-02-15
Would you try another book from John Williams and/or Robin Field?
Robin Field - No! His attempt at voice acting was terrible, with the majority a minor variation of feminine pubescent boy voices. Unbearable. I tried twice to finish because the book itself is interesting but it just left me angry both times. Drop the voice acting.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Feminine voice acting.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Read the book.
