Every cringy trope and cliche. Main character is always the smartest in the room, can solve any problem without much trouble, attracts women and makes men jealous, kills trained adult men without effort in his early teens. Making him an anti-hero does not make him interesting. Zero character arc. Not my thing, but there’s some good, rich prose and interesting fights.

Historia
A parallel universe. South Texas. Narcotics are legal, and there’s a new contraband on the market: ancient Olmec artifacts, shrunken indigenous heads, and filtered animals - species of animals brought back from extinction to clothe, feed, and generally amuse the very wealthy. Esteban Bellacosa has lived in the border town of MacArthur long enough to know to keep quiet. But his simple life starts to get complicated when the swashbuckling investigative journalist Paco Herbert invites him to come to an illegal underground dinner serving filtered animals.

Wonderfully strange, fascinating near-future border story

The author's writing style is filled with evocative imagery, and effortlessly merges intricate plot development with richly drawn characters. The exploration of existential themes surrounding the essence of life and the meaning of having a soul adds a profound layer to the narrative. This book truly captures the essence of introspection and engages readers in a reflective journey that lingers long after the final page. Highly recommended for those seeking a mesmerizing blend of cultural contact, fantasy elements, poetic prose, and existential contemplation.
