Pacific Crest Trail, Then and Now

Historia
What's it like to spend six months walking the length of the United States, from Mexico to Canada, following a wilderness trail? Liz and Simon Willis tackled the Pacific Crest Trail in 2002 at a time many people now consider to be a 'classic era' on the PCT. They recorded conversations with hikers, trail angels and townsfolk and, eventually, assembled them into this audio time capsule of a life-changing endurance walk. Things are brought up to date in fresh interviews with people who know the trail well, including a couple who hiked the PCT exactly twenty years later.

Meet the hikers
Revisado: 03-05-23
I have been listening to a few books recounting the PCT through hike experiences. Each one had a different take on it and I warmed to all of them even if at the outset sometimes I was not immediately connecting with the narrator. This podcats is a super complement to what I heard about PCT told in the snippet interviews with people doing it. So not only one person recount but voices, opinions, stories of others. It is really great. I hope one day I will share this experience in real myself.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the book. It brought and expressed a reflection on our current civilisation that I might sense but without such a clarity.

Heartwarming and uplifting
Revisado: 12-18-21
This is a wonderful story. At times painful but noble and touching. It is on the verge of the romance genre but being more serious and more psychological. I could see it being turn into a beautiful movie. A story of a deep love between men, warriors, monks who dare express it through their bodies without shame.

Good concept of the story. Would enjoy even more exploring furter the woolf side of it. I find a bit flat using very common endearing terms such as baby for an Alpha male.

Historia
These are dangerous times for democracy. We live in an age of winners and losers, where the odds are stacked in favour of the already fortunate. Stalled social mobility and entrenched inequality give the lie to the promise that 'you can make it if you try'. And the consequence is a brew of anger and frustration that has fuelled populist protest, with the triumph of Brexit and election of Donald Trump.

Revisado: 12-06-20
Great analysis of the predicament most developed societies have landed. I find my own actions hugely influenced by the meritocratic bias. I never questioned it, I was on the receiving / winning side of that reality. It is really worth reconsidering the whole meritocratic construct. But, I am afraid not much of the criticism would ever be adopted, the rich and powerful will have too much too lose.

Historia
Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

A bit of sobering look at human nature, yet without passing judgement. Good explanation of the hidden motives grounded in evolutionary psychology. A position worth considering.

Sweet story with a dash hot moments
Revisado: 09-28-19
Really enjoyed it. It was just like watching one of a Hallmark movies or Gilmore Girls but gay. Yes it is a bit sweet but still addresses some real psychological issues. The hot moments were also quite enjoyable in their wholesomeness.
