So much going for it and then failed to deliver. Interesting world, check. But too confusing with lots of names and places. engaging characters, yes. but too many of them and no real development. gender interesting, you bet. but then I'm repeatedly bashed in the head about male's wearing skirts. all the time, all the skirts. sigh.

Could have been brilliant. exceptional cast and promising story, engaged characters. And then that ending. Unnecessary tragedy for dramatic nonsense

Wonderful And Awful Narration

Excellent story with an incredible world of magic and mystery. Elizabeth Knowelden did a wonderful job however Joel needs to modulate cadence and emphasis. His performance was awful and broke the flow of the story

Interesting bar for the bias

A thoroughly interesting course which would have been far better if it had been less laced with bias. One could anticipate a certain lean towards a female centric view, if not expect it. However the very obvious bias undercut the message rather than enforced it.

As an audio book this story suffered from a lack of editing and a writing style that does not lend itself to enjoyable listening. The word 'Alex' is used so frequently that once I noticed that, I couldn't stop hearing it and oh boy was it irritating. Even in the chapters when Alex was the only character on scene. A few reviews mention that he glibly walks into a mysterious portal without preparation, or heeding the prior warning or thought to missing his child's birthday. It certainly makes him a far less appealing character and then... it's just eh. Middling and honestly my time is limited and I'm not wasting it on a boring, irritating book. Thank goodness for the Audible plus catalogue. back you go, Alex.

Lengthy and boring

I love Lady Hardcastle and Flo, and I anticipated loving this. however the mystery was light, the plot dragged and there was too much idling and backstory. Hope that the next one is better

Interesting world building, fascinating magic, lovely lore and plot development. I however could not and struggled to connect with Danny and Wad. I neither cheered nor delighted in their journeys

good story, awful narrator

Decent overall, good mystery in an interesting setting. The 'posh' English felt very over the top. However the story was almost ruined by the narrator. If your American narrator struggles with an English accent, find another one!
