Why do we so often seek out physical pain and emotional turmoil? We go to movies that make us cry, or scream, or gag. We poke at sores, eat spicy foods, immerse ourselves in hot baths, run marathons. Some of us even seek out pain and humiliation in sexual role-play. Where do these seemingly perverse appetites come from? Drawing on groundbreaking findings from psychology and brain science, The Sweet Spot shows how the right kind of suffering sets the stage for enhanced pleasure.

Too Political. Content is Shallow & Inconsistent
Revisado: 03-16-25
-To summarize: the author is too opinionated and does not present the topic objectively.
-I had to stop listening after an hour. Author spends too much time explaining his political stance.
-He presents various study results that are not consistent with each other. His interpretation of study results seems very narrow. I can think of many factors he does not mention that could explain the study results.
-The books messaging is all over the place and could have benefited from a good editor.
-In my opinion, you are better off listening to Tony Robbins books than this author. Of note, he bashes Tony Robbins early on in the book.

Historia
Of the many books on UFOs and aliens, this one may be unique. Richard Dolan, one of the world’s leading historians of the UFO subject, has analyzed the different alien types and agendas based on longstanding patterns observed by witnesses. This is both a careful review of the best evidence we have of human-alien interaction, as well as a bold speculation of just who the aliens are and what they want. Dolan’s analysis starts with our ancient prehistory and potential genetic modifications and monitoring by extraterrestrials.

Dolan is very thorough with his research. He speculates a bit in this book but it is based on years of research.

Not a time management book
Revisado: 05-12-24
One of the worst Audible books I have ever listened to.
It starts out listing all the author’s family tragedies - how is that even relevant to this topic?
The author’s voice is awful.
To make matters worse the author keeps repeating buzz words for hours on end in sentences that contain no meaning while he explains his vision of how the world should be.
He keeps saying the word “they” as if “they” are keeping you from the life you deserve. But collaboration is a real aspect to productivity, yet the author pushes silos in his vision of the world.
He says Steven Covney was his mentor. Do yourself a favor and read Covney’s 4 discipline (4dx) book instead from Audible.

Very Feminism Centric
Revisado: 08-22-19
Every 10 minutes, the speaker bring up "feminism". She cites Paris Hilton and the show the "The Good Wife". I paid for a class on mythology and want to learn about the past. But instead the focus is making mythology very modern day. Very disappointing.

Historia
The superwealthy in America have been using the insurance industry as their own personal piggy bank since the start of the industrial revolution. When you do it right, you can use this same practice to protect your money all the way until retirement. This is more than just a garbage insurance strategy. This is about investing your money in a way that the fat cats on Wall Street don't like. It's low risk, high reward.

It's an infomercial that you pay to listen to.
Revisado: 03-16-17
I'm up to chapter 7 out of 16. I still have no idea what the book is about. Seems like a 1-minute sales pitch pretending to be a book.
Loud British infomercial announcer - check
Famous quotes -check
Out of nowhere personal stories designed for you to connect to that have nothing to do with the book's topic - check
Scare tactics as part of the sales pitch - check
Yep, it's an infomercial. It is the most painful audio book I have ever listened to. It needs to be removed from audible. Very disappointed with audible on this one. It has no right being in their library.

Historia
Mark Mathabane was weaned on devastating poverty and schooled in the cruel streets of South Africa’s most desperate ghetto, where bloody gang wars and midnight police raids were his rites of passage. Like every other child born in the hopelessness of apartheid, he learned to measure his life in days, not years. Yet Mark Mathabane, armed only with the courage of his family and a hard-won education, raised himself up from the squalor and humiliation to win a scholarship to an American university.

The only point of this book is for a sequel.
Revisado: 10-18-10
The story is a good one. The characters are interesting. But, just as I was really getting into the story, the ending happens. The ending is a setup for a sequel. Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with this. Without giving too much away, the story ends in such a way that a good sequel isn't really possible. There's virtually no pay off in this book. But, Scott Brick, as usual, does a terrific performance.
