Historia
In 1943, when a frail old white woman shows up in Red Clay, Alabama, at the home of a Black former slave—on the morning following his funeral—his family hardly knows what to expect after she utters the words “… a lifetime ago, my family owned yours.” Adelaide Parker has a story to tell—one of ambition, betrayal, violence, and redemption—that shaped both the fate of her family and that of the late Felix H. Parker. But there are gaps in her knowledge, and she’s come to Red Clay seeking answers from a family with whom she shares a name and a history that neither knows in full.

Just Wow!
Revisado: 08-19-24
The title caught my attention, the cover drew me in, and I was invested after reading the first few pages. Tanya grew up knowing what she wanted and how to get it. Her story had so many twists, turns, and jaw-droppers, I almost felt like I was reading fiction! I enjoy memoirs very much, and this one not only kept me engaged- it made me think, and recall times when folks either underestimated or undervalued me. At the core of this tale, the reader should keep in mind that it's easy to get caught up and stumble, but it takes courage and tenacity to fight and make things right.
I'm definitely purchasing a physical copy of this book and adding it to my home library. I highly recommend!

Outspoken Leona lives to break rules, have a good time, and scandalize their respectable hometown of Lexington. Fiona is a seemingly demure churchgoing girl who is the apple of her domineering, widowed mother Mavis’s eye. But together, the twins have fooled teachers, boyfriends, bosses, racist police—and most importantly, straitlaced Mavis.

Un-put-downable!!
Revisado: 04-09-24
Bravo, Mary Monroe! This is my first time reading one of Ms. Monroe's books, and it won't be my last. Such an amazing story! I already knew that a story centering the lives and shenanigans of identical twins would be good reading, but I didn't expect such an epic tale. The narration was excellent, as well. I got fully immersed in the world of Leona and Fiona, and I was sad to hear the words, "The end."

A Look Into a Mother's Wounds
Revisado: 11-20-23
Wow, wow, wow! I didn't know what I was signing up for when I started listening to this book. Something good, yes... but I received so much more. This book is a master class in storytelling! Chapters 26 and 27 touched my heart in ways that made me wonder if the author was watching over my shoulder whenever I wrote in my journal as a young girl and woman. I want to hug Denene, and tell her thank you for writing this masterpiece.

This book is required reading/listening for anyone who's invested in reproductive justice, the stories of Black women, and the complexities of motherhood, love, and choice. An Epic Family History
Revisado: 11-28-21
Loved everything about this book! The narration was exceptional, and I got completely swept up in this family's epic becoming over the years- from slavery to present day. The blooming of Dumpling and Sherry's mother-daughter relationship was humorous, at times painful, and beautiful overall. Bernice McFadden is one of my favorite authors for a reason! She's a master storyteller, and always brings all of the details full circle (if you pay attention).
