Historia
Wolff here returns with fresh revelations - about biding one's time, or experiencing first love, or burying one's mother - that come to a variety of characters in circumstances at once everyday and extraordinary. A retired Marine enrolls in college while her son trains for Iraq. A lawyer takes a difficult deposition. An American in Rome indulges the Gypsy who's picked his pocket.

Troubling, funny stories that deserve better
Revisado: 03-10-16
If you could sum up Our Story Begins in three words, what would they be?
Surprising, puzzling, long-lived in my head.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was OK but seemed to be totally off on his inflections in some stories. Not enough to ruin the stories, tho.

Historia
Wilder's stories consistently explored the connections between the commonplace and cosmic dimensions of human experience, always returning to fundamental questions about the meaning of life. This Pulitzer Prize-winning tale concerns the lives of five people who fall to their deaths from a Peruvian rope bridge in 1714. A humble Franciscan, Brother Juniper, witnesses the accident and determines to learn about the lives of the victims in order to find out whether this accident happened by chance or by plan.

Actually the story isn't very good! I expected better. And the reader wasn't really suited to this type of book.
What was most disappointing about Thornton Wilder’s story?
Boring story, annoying reader.
Would you be willing to try another one of Sam Waterston’s performances?
Maybe.
Could you see The Bridge of San Luis Rey being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Guy de Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story as well as one of the form's finest writers. His stories are characterized by their economy of style and efficient, seemingly effortless dénouements

Not his best stories and not the greatest reader
Revisado: 06-18-14
What did you like best about Guy de Maupassant: Selected Stories? What did you like least?
Occasional good story. Really bad reader(s).
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
N/A
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
Very stilted, annoying Boston or Bronx accent.
Could you see Guy de Maupassant: Selected Stories being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
N/A
Any additional comments?
Yeah, don't let this guy read anymore. From the reader of "The Horla", anyway. It was so disturbing listening to his plodding, badly-accented speech that it really took any enjoyment away from the story.
