I didn’t think it was possible to have my heart torn to shreds as many times as she managed it in this book. Unbelievably good performance as well

I adore Ambessa and I’ve only ever heard good things about CL Clark’s writing …. But this was not it for me. the plot dragged, the characterization of Ambessa was accurate to what we see on screen and yet still fell flat. I did enjoy the lore reveals we got.

Vis at the start is intolerable. I need to get that out there. He is arrogant and annoying and impossibly good at things he shouldn’t be, and genuinely the first part of this book (there are three) is some of the most painful reading / listening I’ve done. I stand by it and I completely understand why some people on review sites DNF early. I’m a strong believer in never DNFing though, so I persevered.

This book really picks up around part II and Vis **starts** to lose some of his Gary Stu status. He never truly is immune to it but you know what, some of it is just being the main character. I get it. After he reaches (minor spoilers) the Academy, the plot actually starts to develop and there were moments I truly felt surprised or intrigued. The pacing gets so much better and there are some very well written moments on grief and catharsis that I really enjoyed.

That being said, the treatment of female characters is overall weak. This is a very very male heavy book and it’s not really to my taste. The book is set in a patriarchy and it is heavily reinforced- I think Vis mentions his mother ONCE and his sisters (light spoilers) only in the fact of them being dead. His father is the most important figure to him and while I understand his influence, I did simultaneously find the lack of female power or agency in this book a little troubling. Women exist to push Vis forward and are rarely powerful agents of their own, even in a book about political intrigue.

I found myself enjoying Vis more at the end and I do think he is developed well with some touching moments, but the drawback of a rough part 1 and the lack of female characters made me rate this story overall a 2. I will nevertheless pick up Book 2, but this was not my favorite.

First, the standalone stories are the absolute stars here. Seven Years from Home and what she’s working on for her new book are outstanding. Lauren Fortgang as a narrator is always excellent and she excelled in The Long Way Round- which I didn’t expect to like as much as I did. I’m going to be thinking about Seven Years From Home for a long time, in a good way.

The bad: Vici is good, but the other historical fantasy works were not my cup of tea and the Pride and Prejudice story was an absolute slog to get through. I also really disliked the short story on Irene Adler.

I think world building and true fantasy / sci fi are Novik’s strengths and so because of that, to me, the historical writings fell flat. I do recommend this collection though - I think it’s a good sampler platter to know what you’ll like from her and what you might not and I’m very interested to read more of some of her works.

Inventive world building, great voice acting. A great stand alone novel - though I wouldn’t complain at a sequel :-)

A Good Intro

This was a good intro to a new series that lagged in the middle. Lots of interesting concepts that I think stumbled on the landing - the horror of what lies beneath, religious cults, trauma, and what it turns us into.

Thoroughly enjoyed every POV but Hakara’s- every time I heard her narrator start a chapter I had to sigh. Hakara spends an enormous portion of the book dragging her feet in self loathing and trying to quip it away, even in momentous scenes. I just didn’t personally enjoy her arc but Rasha, Mull, and Sheuan I adored. I honestly think this book could’ve been written from the perspectives of just those three (and the secret other narrator) and come out just fine.

Worldbuilding was unique, I was invested, wish there was less of Hakara. 3.5/5
