a foundational work that feels like a burden
Revisado: 12-19-21
Read this book because of what it becomes. not because it's fun. Rosamund Pike makes this chore of a story bearable while you're waiting for the characters who are largely unlikable and unsympathetic, do something worthwhile. by the end, I was really excited for book two and I'm looking forward to the rest of the adventure. but I would advise new readers of the series to watch the first season of the show before starting book 1. This book has significant pacing problems and very poor characterization on any one other than Rand & Moiraine.

Historia
The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Ruler - the man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand years - has been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protégé, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves.

A bit tedious at times but mostly a fun read.

My only real complaint is that the supposed "Etium" storehouse is conveniently and mysteriously missing in order to create tension but never gets a satisfactory explanation. This detail felt like a "because plot" contrivance rather than good storytelling.

King Randor has declared martial law, imprisoned the pregnant Crown Princess Alassa in the Tower of Alexis, and started preparations for a first strike against his enemies. The time has come for everyone to choose a side. Emily has arrived in Alexis with the intention of freeing Alassa before her father can have her executed. But as Emily and her friends are drawn into a maelstrom of rebellious factions and crown loyalists, they find themselves faced with an insolvable problem.

Historia
Thrown back in time after the spells binding Whitehall School together nearly collapsed, Emily finds herself in the days of Lord Whitehall. But everything she knows about the past is a lie. The Whitehall Commune is in hiding from a great and terrible foe, while some of the legendary founders bicker like children and others call on deadly and untrustworthy entities with agendas of their own.

Inspired and relentless
Revisado: 01-12-18
An unrelenting experience of a book. Nuttall continues to weave an astoundingly complex tapestry of a story. Threading call backs, Easter eggs and intensity into the rich continuity he has created throughout the last nine books. His mastery of character work is enthralling as Emily is thrown into a setting that makes her even more of a fish out water and Nuttall is on point every step of the way making Emily even more compelling, relatable, concientous and pensive. This is easily my favorite adventure thus far.
