Historia
Growing up on their hardscrabble farm in rural Kentucky, 15-year-old Albertina "Bertie" Winslow has learned a lot from her mama, Polly. She knows how to lance a boil, make a pie crust, butcher a pig, and tend to every chore that needs doing. What she doesn't know, but is forced to reckon with all too soon, is how to look after children as a mother should. When Polly succumbs to a long illness, Bertie takes on responsibility for her four younger siblings and their dissolute, unreliable daddy.

The story was wonderfully heartwarming and engaging. I was drawn in immediately to Bertie’s world. This was so interesting and kept me interested from the 1st to the last page! What a creative and beautiful coming of age story! I want more from this author and narrator!

I love the turtle theme and how it ties into the mother daughter relationship in this story. As usual, the author has created relatable characters and the dynamics of familial relationships. I love all her books. Now, on to book 2!

Historia
Not only do Southerners talk slowly, but sometimes the whole language is hard to understand. No one realizes that more than Memphis belle Leelee Satterfield. Watching her tackle life and love in Vermont was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to antics, charades, mischief, and romance. Now that she’s back in Memphis, and starting a new relationship with Peter, the Yankee chef from her New England inn, you’d think she’d sit back and enjoy her newly crafted life back home in Dixie. But that just wouldn’t be as much fun.

An entertaining lighthearted series
Revisado: 10-08-21
If you’re looking for a profound thought evoking story exploring the gritty realities of southern life, you won’t find it here. This is a sweet charming character telling her story. Some of the other reviews on this series comment on the lack of depth and found the characters to be exaggerated caricatures and even offensively so. I didn’t. I enjoyed the story. Not everything you read has to be a life changing experience. Reading for fun is a thing too! I do, however, wish that the same narrator was used for all three books. I really enjoy when the author narrates, as Lisa Patton did for the third novel in the series, but I had already become used to Marguerite Gavins voice as Leelee Satterfield and developed the imagery to go along with it. I like them both but would have preferred the same narrator for the sake of consistency.

When Sandra Leigh was seven years old, she fell into the role of protector of her mother and three younger siblings. One winter night, she ushered her mother out of the house during one of her father’s tirades, and then snuck her back into the dark home through a window. Sandra was used to events like these; what she wasn’t used to were the mountains and nature surrounding her new home in West Virginia.

A very unique story that leaves you hoping for a sequel
Revisado: 08-07-21
I have just read some other reviews for this audiobook, and many of them express disgust for the content and contempt for the author for writing it. I feel compelled to defend the author for the simple fact that it was a well-crafted, thought-provoking, beautifully written story not, by any means, in my opinion, a manifesto for pedophiles. All of the characters were intriguing. You don't have to feel comfortable with everything you read, That's the point of stories like this. You're supposed to experience an array of intense emotions. What is better than a character that you want to love and hate at the same time? Did I want to scream at Kellen when he crossed the line? Of course, I did. Did I also feel affection for his commitment to caring for Wavy and Donal? Absolutely! Did I agree with Wavy's aunt's perspective and the action she took? Again, yes! I also found things about Wavy's aunt that I disliked concerning how easily she initially gave up on trying to help her sister's children because it was too much of a challenge. I also understand that life is messy and weird and beautiful and ugly and so many other things and that is what this story shows and it does it in a way that will capture your attention to the very last sentence. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I found Wavy to be so mesmerizing that I didn't want the story to end. I really would like to see a sequel written so that some of the other characters' story lines could continue and include some background, such as Wavy's teacher and especially her college roommate! Excellent story. Not everything is meant to be agreed with!

The law of attraction is based on the idea that everything in the universe has a polarity, meaning that everything - from the food you eat to the people you talk to, to the things you say to the things you think - contains either a positive or a negative kind of energy. Notice that being with people who complain or rant a lot tends to make you feel bad, even though you're not exactly experiencing what they're going through - that's the law of attraction working its magic. When you focus on negative stuff, then more negative stuff will happen.
