Historia
In the wake of the 1929 stock market crash, Lanny Budd’s financial acumen and his marriage into great wealth enable him to continue the lifestyle he has always enjoyed. But the devastation the collapse has wrought on ordinary citizens has only strengthened Lanny’s socialist ideals. In Germany to visit relatives, Lanny encounters a disturbing atmosphere of hatred and jingoism. But Lanny’s gravest fear is the threat a national socialist government poses to the German Jewish family of Hansi, the musician husband of Lanny’s sister, Bess.

Chilling. Are we bound to repeat this history? Beautifully written with superb narration by Bronson Pinchot. Upton Sinclair would weep at the state of America’s government today.

Historia
In her long-awaited new novel, Lee explores with devastating poignancy the emotions, identities, and relationships of three very different American women living in the same small expat community in Hong Kong. As each woman struggles with her own demons, their lives collide in ways that have irreversible consequences for them all. Atmospheric, moving, and utterly compelling, The Expatriates confirms Lee as an exceptional talent and one of our keenest observers of women’s inner lives.

Drama of privilege

The writing is fine. Performance is fine. But for me the overall story was shallow trying to be deep. A decent beach listen. Forgettable novel.

Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Cruelty
Revisado: 01-29-24
Great writing. But. Set in Ireland but it’s the authors view of people anywhere today. Very dismal view of human behavior. Not a kindness to be found in any character. I wonder if people today think there are no heroes, no bravery, honesty, insight or goodness? I know for sure there is now and always have been ‘the helpers’.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

I have always loved trees
Revisado: 10-28-23
I just finished listening to this a second time, the first over a year ago. The narrator brings the characters to life. The story weaves together our relationship to trees with a truth that makes me give them my deeply reverent reflection and gratitude.

Unforgettable, soul touching tale
Revisado: 07-23-23
One of the finest books I have ever read. The author’s honesty speaks to me and about us all.
This narrator is the very best, his inflections, gender, accents and heartfelt delivery carried the author’s words straight to my heart.

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Delightful
Revisado: 03-12-23
Enjoyed this story and the narrator. Nice to read a tale that is new territory, creative and engaging. Some folks have dissed the narrator, but he speaks as the story teller would . . . at over 100 years of age.

Historia
1916: Norma Wallace, age 15, arrived in New Orleans. Sexy and shrewd, she quickly went from streetwalker to madam and by 1920 had opened what became a legendary house of prostitution. There she entertained a steady stream of governors, gangsters, and movie stars until she was arrested at last in 1962. Shortly before she died in 1974, she tape-recorded her memories. With those tapes and original research, Christine Wiltz chronicles Norma's rise and fall with the social history of New Orleans.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-02-23
This story has great material, but the author tells it, sadly, does not show it. Seems a terrible waste of a deliciously complex life story. There is no character development to engage the reader.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Rich in meaning
Revisado: 12-17-22
Mr King’s psychological symbolism and archetypes sing out loud and long in this story. Unlike horrors that come from the other, this resonates with the struggles we wrestle with in ourselves. I think it’s my favorite of his novels. The narrator’s performance is stellar.
