Historia
Ananke thought her week couldn't get worse, but as she hunts for the man who screwed up her previous job, things really go sideways. Turns out, she's not the only one having problems. Rosario can acquire anything for anyone, but can she obtain freedom for herself when her latest assignment goes awry? Dylan's sure his new gig will be a walk in the park - or rather, a drive, given that he's a courier. Unfortunately, the road is a bit bumpier than he expected.

Took awhile, but good story
Revisado: 10-11-24
It took awhile to get into the meat of the story, but it gathered steam as the many characters became clear. I like the narrators voice overall, but she sometimes spoke so quickly and so “clipped” that she lost effectiveness. Audio books require a little more nuance in my opinion (I always listen with earbuds so too much chop is challenging). But Brett Battles set up a new series well. Looking forward to the next one.

The world thought Dmitri Melnikov was dead. Especially Quinn. Why would he have believed otherwise, since the bomb intended for Melnikov had nearly killed Quinn and several members of his team? But Melnikov is not dead. He has been taken by someone who wants to shut him up. And the former chess champion isn’t the only one who has been abducted.

Classic teamwork
Revisado: 09-27-24
Another interesting job by the team, and a complex story that takes a bit to get rolling. But I’m increasingly annoyed at Brick’s narration style, which is often hard on the ears and overly dramatic. The sarcastic choppy cadence for Quinn, Orlando, and Nate sounds all the same, and loses the uniqueness of their characters. But Battles is a master storyteller so I stuck with it. Bring back Villa!

That way. It’s such a simple request that Nate doesn’t think twice about turning down the path Liz suggests. But when he finds the body, he realizes he should have known better. Liz has the habit of pointing him toward those who need his help, even if they're no longer living. His deceased girlfriend isn’t the only one pushing him to solve the woman’s murder. After his best friend Jar discovers the woman’s true identity, she insists they need to investigate. Nate is not as sure. The police are on the case, after all, and if he and Jar intervene, they'd only get in the way.

Battles at his best
Revisado: 09-14-24
I’ve read (listened to) over a dozen Brett Battles books by now, and this one has just jumped to the top for me. The plot was intriguing and clear, the characters so well developed, and the twists interesting.
And the narration is perfect. Clear and mildly understated, which seems to fit “Nate’s” personality so well. Some narrators are over the top with their acting… he lets the story breathe.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Fun ride
Revisado: 08-20-24
Action-packed and sometimes a stretch. Enjoyed the descriptions of the Big Island and its people. Good character development, with no perfect personalities. Narration is, predictably, over the top at times, and oddly “halting” and slow. I finally listened at 1.2 speed and it was much better. While I appreciate Brick’s experience and effort, he could dial the “performance” back a bit and be much more effective. Overall enjoyed it very much, though.

Honoring of classic Woods
Revisado: 08-14-24
Brett masterfully carries the torch of the Stone Barrington series by writing in the style that honors Stuart Woods’ early books. Having read the entire series I grew frustrated with the weak female characters, only there to either “satisfy” Stone or double cross him. Even Holly Barker was one-dimensional eventually. Battles carefully adds more of Viv than we’ve seen for a while, and adds a new character that holds her own.
Dino is classic Dino, and Teddy lends enough help to assure us that all the characters are alive and well, including Tony Roberts, who has brought them all to life for years.
Looking forward to many more of these, and Battles’ other works, too.

Like most in the series, the audio book requires close attention. The jumps between years and characters are challenging to keep track of sometimes, until the pattern is established.Interesting characters, as always.

Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

An unlikely bad book by SW
Revisado: 06-27-23
I thought I’d listened to every Stuart Woods book but noticed this one. I made it through, but barely. Tony Roberts salvaged it, with his incredibly solid performance as usual. But even he seemed confused by some of the convoluted characters. Glad this one is over.
