George C. Daughan's magnificently detailed account of the battle of Lexington and Concord will challenge the prevailing narrative of the American War of Independence. It was, Daughan argues, based as much on economics as on politics.

the author offers new perspective on the sociological aspect of the struggle. But he shows insufficient insight into British politics of the time.

Historia
Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Filling in the blanks
Revisado: 08-06-18
Somewhat along the lines of "Rosencranz & Guildenstern are Dead," this fleshes out Shakespeare's tale, putting it in the context of medieval Scotland. Macbeth gets an inner voice, Lady Macbeth gets a persona. The performance is in pitch-perfect Scottish-inflected English. Great fun.

Historia
History was made at the 2015 Belmont Stakes when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown, the first since Affirmed in 1978. As magnificent as the champion is, the team behind him has been all too human while on the road to immortality. Written by an award-winning New York Times sportswriter, American Pharoah is the definitive account not only of how the ethereal colt won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, but how he changed lives. Through extensive interviews, Drape explores the making of an exceptional racehorse, chronicling key events en route to history.

A lively introduction to a new subject
Revisado: 05-22-18
Horse racing is an arcane field unto itself. Joe Drape clearly knows his stuff and provides a wonderful entry for readers (like me) who aren't familiar with the field, but recall the headlines over the years. Drape raises some difficult questions about why horses today are so fragile, whether they are sometimes abused, and why the owners are such (ahem) lively characters.
Drape tells the story of certain events from the points of view of several participants, a bit like LaPierre and Collins in "Is Paris Burning" or "Oh Jerusalem."
A good choice if you'd like to get into the subject.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Explaining the Modern World
Revisado: 02-19-17
World War I pitted the cavalry against the machine gun, the empire (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Russian) against the Republic, and the idea of the nobility of battle against the reality of soldiers freezing and starving, gassed and shredded by artillery that could fire for tens of miles. Industrialized warfare was deployed without scruple or humanitarian consideration.
Meyer lays out most of that well, and explains the groundwork for the modern political world, and for modern warfare. A century later, it explains how 1914 resembled the modern world and how it didn't. It explained why Woodrow Wilson should rank near the bottom in a ranking of presidents.
The writing is clear and, at times, lively. The structure of the book is a bit unusual but suits the material well.
I found it hard to put down.

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

An enjoyable tale set in contemporary San Francisco and New York, inflected with the current technology and information revolution. The author has some sense of the history of technology and information science. Novels sometimes shine for their gritty detail; this one's details are about information technology.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Life is imitating Roth's art
Revisado: 08-04-16
A country with bitter internal divisions faces a world dissolving into savage war, and a man with no political experience but a high national profile marches into the White House. His radical policies begin to transform the country in frightening ways. It was written ten years ago but reads like a thinly-disguised version of America in the summer of 2016.
And the narration is pitch-perfect.

Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Historia
Three years ago, John Schwartz, a national correspondent for the New York Times, got the call that every parent hopes never to receive: His 13-year-old son, Joe, was in the hospital following a suicide attempt. Mustering the courage to come out to his classmates, Joe had delivered a tirade about homophobic and sexist attitudes that was greeted with unease and confusion by his fellow students. Hours later, he took an overdose of pills.

Raising a not-quite-average child
Revisado: 12-23-12
Anybody who has, or had, a child who is not quite at the statistical mean will appreciate this book. John Schwartz writes about putting a creative kid, who shows some of the human species' variability, through a one-size-fits-all school system and social structure - and coming out whole on the other side.
Millions of parents go through a version of what John and his wife did, whether their kids are gay or straight, and would benefit from his insight.
And his narration adds an entertaining element. Never underestimate the power of a Texan storyteller.
