All the tools are there. The writer clearly has talent with well-written scenes and the makings of a pretty elaborate world. The narrator is very dynamic with character voices. The concept is unique -- never heard of a weller before. The story had a science fiction vibe to it.

The main character found himself in a series of situations, but was never in doubt that he would survive somehow. And he seemed to just wander through the story line as a sequence of events vs any kind of greater plot taking place. I'd prefer some sense of purpose in each book if I were to continue the series.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for this author and this narrator. Both are really good.

This book exceeded my expectations.

I've hard poor luck with shorter duration audiobooks, but I found this book to be nearly nonstop packed with spot on advice. I do not do a good job of establishing boundaries, and I sometimes let people walk over me. This book provides concrete tips to reconsider a variety of situations and offers an alternative more assertive manner of representing myself and my interests.

If you are anything like me and know there are situations in which you should be more assertive, this book will help you to understand how to do that.

The chapter that discussed short term bonds was my favorite because it had the most practical takeaways of all of the chapters. The rest of the book was largely a series of overviews of various investment vehicles. Most of the discussion was high level so additional research would be required to completely understand or implement the ideas presented.

The author mentioned that there are definitely ways to time the stock market, yet did not share what any of those proven ways would entail. I do not believe timing the market consistently is possible, so I would have preferred the author to substantiate that position with evidence of some sort.

Only sparsely was there mention of being in your 40s. During the presentation of each type of investing, specific implications of being in your 40s did not come up.

This book took a long time to get going. From chapter 16 forward the book was a detailed step-by-step guide to get started with rental properties. Stay with it, and you will receive all of the information you hoped for. Even starting from Chapter 16, this book is definitely worth a credit.

In no particular order (I didn't take notes, but I should have):
- How to get your personal finances in order
- How to select a country, city, and community to look for properties
- How to determine the right price to pay to achieve your desired return on investment capital
- How to work through the offer and inspection process
- How to get financing and work through the closing process
- How to prep the home for renting and attract the optimal tenants
- How to evaluate and select a property management company
- How to evict a trouble tenant and how to improve your chances of finding better tenants to avoid this
- How to manage the operation of your rental business to stay profitable

I absolutely couldn't stand the narration of this book. However, I found the content so detailed (once it got started) that I still consider this easily worth a credit. If you've considered investing in rental properties but have little to no experience, this book will give you a solid foundation.

If you're a bit like me you want to speak more effectively, but you aren't sure exactly how to do that.

This book costs roughly the same as a single cup of coffee from a major chain. Skip one cup of coffee and you can improve your communication for the rest of your life.

I've heard mixed reviews of calorie tracking as a means of weight control. Some people have extremely positive results while others don't realize the same weight loss. If you ever wondered why that might be, this book will help you to understand what's going on.

With a thorough review of everything we may choose to eat this book lays out what we should and should not be eating for optimal health, weight management, and type 2 diabetes management if that pertains to you.

The narrator did a great job. The science sometimes left my scratching my head, but I found the overall thesis to be believable, and I have adopted some of the author's suggestions into my diet. Specifically, I have started reducing my heavy reliance on artificial sweeteners because they still cause an insulin reaction just like sugar. We all know insulin to be a culprit related to diabetes, but the author makes a case in this book that it is at the heart of effective weight management as well.

Great book well worth a credit if you want to learn how to effectively lose weight or manage type 2 diabetes. The best part to me? This is a standalone work that's not trying to sell me supplements, a new fad diet, or anything else. After reading this book, you will have the tools and information you need to improve your diet, your weight, and your overall health.

Would you consider the audio edition of Understanding Michael Porter to be better than the print version?

I listened to this while commuting to and from the office. Because I was driving, I expect that the audio edition was a better choice. Seriously, I have no idea. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version, and I have no experience with the print version.

What other book might you compare Understanding Michael Porter to and why?

If I knew of other business books that were this good, I would add them to my reading list. I haven't found anything similar to date. I did greatly enjoy the insights shared in The Real Life MBA by Jack Welch with a lot of material I was able to immediately take to work. But this book is really in a different league.

Which scene was your favorite?

A clear, concise understanding of competitive advantage -- both what it is and what it isn't. But the way so many brilliant concepts were tied together so easily was absolutely superb.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I spent half of the book just in awe of the material being presented. The other half I spent annoyed that I had never heard of this book nor its contents. I feel that had I read this book at the beginning of my career it would have been a complete game changer.

Any additional comments?

Many complaints about the narrator on this book in other reviews. I noticed what they were complaining about, and I HATE narrators that stand out for bad reasons. I heard the annoying speech, but I didn't find it to be a distraction from the material presented.

Would you listen to The Cartel again? Why?

I will probably listen to the Power of the Dog again. And then The Cartel. Both books are fantastic.

What other book might you compare The Cartel to and why?

If there is a book out there comparable to this one, I want to know what it is so I can read it.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Best narrator I have heard. Tons of accents. Female voices. Female voices with accents. Not a problem for this guy. And he puts life into the story. Superb narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Erica's cell phone battery dies and what happens after.

Any additional comments?

This book takes news from the headlines and sets a compelling fictional storyline on top of it. Absolutely great job. I have a new favorite author.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I did recommend it to a friend. He is already on chapter 8, and he also likes the book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The story constantly shifts to where the action is. So there are few to no "filler" pages.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

This guy has a great voice. Great personality in the reading. He does accents. He does female voices. The best I have heard to date.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Wanted to? Maybe. But it took me a couple of weeks to get through it while driving to/from work.

Any additional comments?

I liked this book enough that I listened to The Cartel after. Another great book. If you are considering this book, do yourself a favor and start listening.

Would you try another book from William R. Forstchen and/or Joe Barrett?

I would not actively seek out a book from either.

I don't personally care for the writing style of the author. Kudos to him though, because many many people do.

I like the narrator just fine except for his rendition of southern female voices. No bueno.

What could William R. Forstchen have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I don't know. This story just didn't click with me. I would prefer a book where the protagonist was an equal party fitting in after a disaster instead of the automatic leader.

Too many situations were contrived where it came off more as a preaching moment from the author and it distracted from the story.

How could the performance have been better?

Work on your female voices. I would have had an easier time with the mother-in-law's voice "as is" if it was portrayed in the story as the father-in-law living as a transexual. Because that's what the voice sounded like to me.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

You don't have to live in fear of any crazy conspiracy to think it's a good idea to become a bit more self-sufficient and ready to sustain your family through a disaster.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend Going Home: The Survivalist Series, Book 1 to anyone looking for a better EMP-based story. One Second After definitely gave a few more things to think about, but as a story, I found the other book much more to my liking.
