Good pacing with excellent narration. I enjoyed the plot and the interesting twists in the vein of an Alan Furst novel.

I think Martin Amis’ greatest strength is the characters he creates and this novel is no exception. This book is definitely more about the characters than the story. It’s an interesting examination how “Women’s liberation” created casualties in the new social contract that was ushered it.

Not what I expected, so many twists and turns. The final hour was very reminiscent of McEwan’s Atonement.

Well written with memorable characters. The Russian names were tough to keep track of initially but the characters are so fleshed out, the grim world of Razumikhin is all around you. The allure of delusional grandeur is a relevant theme today, as is the creep of radical corrupting influences among our society.

History can Truly be stranger than fiction. Peno experienced remarkable events and survived to tell the tale.

This book is ONLY the background and lead up to the war. There is zero information on the relative strengths of the armies, the commanders, or any of the actual maneuvers. The title is deceptive, the book ends with the outbreak and does not cover the war itself. Not worth the read.

I originally was looking for a history of the Franco-Prussian War and when I found this, I assumed I would get that and a lot more. I was wrong. While this book does cover the full history of Prussia, The time spent on certain stages of that history varies wildly. Nearly a half of the book covers Frederick the Elector and his grandson Frederick the Great. However World War One is only given five minutes! The Franco Prussian War, the original reason for my purchase happens almost as a passing afterthought. The pace slows down toward the end and there is a good amount of time spent on the Weimar Republic but then it speeds up again as soon as World War II breaks out and it ends. Ultimately, After 26 hours of listening, I still don’t know anything more about the Franco Prussian War.

The twists continue with book two in the Licanius Trilogy and while many questions from book one are answered and I definitely know more than I did, there are still some big questions remaining. I found James Islington’s writing style similar to Robert Jordan.

Much like its predecessor, once the action starts, it barely comes up from air. Out of the cauldron and into the fire, you will fly through this book. Narration is great and while I didn't think the battle scenes and story were as good as Tiger Tracks, it was still excellent. If you haven't read Tiger Tracks though, I would recommend starting there first.

Lots of stereotypical tropes, I was hoping for better twists and turns. My first of this author.
