Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

A Bit Overwrought
Revisado: 12-15-23
The narrator was adequate. She wasn’t annoying, but her characters had little to distinguish one from the other.
The story could have used a bit more editing. I found myself wishing I could skim over the far too frequent, overwrought, dangerous attraction scenes. It almost felt as though the author used those scenes as filler when she couldn’t think of something substantive to say.
All-in-all, this is a book with good potential. It could have been a great story with some editing.

Historia
After years of self-imposed exile, Christy McCauley returns to West Virginia, only to discover that it has become the hunting grounds for a savage beast stalking the hollows of rural Augusta County beneath the light of the full moon. Authorities are baffled as the unknown creature grows ever bolder and the slaughter, more horrific. When Christy finds herself caught in the path of the beast’s rampage, she must decide: flee her home to save her own life, or stand her ground and with the help of her friends, hunt down the predator, and destroy it before it kills again.

Good Story, Questionable Choice of Narrator
Revisado: 10-12-23
This was a good werewolf tale—intense, with relatable characters. I think I might buy it as a hard copy or on Kindle.
The narrator was sub-par and distracted my attention throughout. The words “wearily” and “warily” were pronounced the same through most of the book. I’d begin to wonder whether the author was at fault, then the narrator proved it was her own doing by pronouncing them appropriately when they were used in consecutive sentences.
As I said, this was a good story with a poor narrator.

Historia
Leaving my husband was hard. Trying to face the world alone with my teenage daughter is the sort of thing nightmares are made of, but I caught a break. My best friend just hired me for a great job, with perks like a rent-free house right beside not just one handsome man, but five! Each one is hotter than the last, and all of them seem interested in me. But everyone around us has these strange golden eyes...and there are the questions no one will answer. And who cares if there's a lot of wildlife running around at night? I do, especially when a wolf keeps sneaking into my backyard.

Wrong Female Narrator
Revisado: 08-21-23
Unconvincing female narrator. The only voice that sounded real was her take on a teenager. Everything else was flat. Male performers were adequate.
The story itself didn’t reach the level of sustained disbelief. The characters never seemed to develop.

Slowwwwww
Revisado: 02-10-22
This story dragged a lot. Part of this was that the characters kept telling their (and others’) background stories, even though this is the third book in the series.
Another issue I had was that this book was a lot “preachier” than the previous two. This began to interrupt the flow of the story. I nearly decided not to finish it.
I may try out the next one…but I’m not sure.

Good Story and Performance
Revisado: 10-11-21
This is the first book by this author I have read. I liked the concept quite a bit. The reader was good, although he might want to work on the female voices (they were all quite similar, but not annoyingly so). The story was interesting, and I hope there’s a sequel. I would recommend this to other readers.

But, to my mind, not as engaging or exciting as the books in the Nemesis series. On the other hand, as a thriller this is pretty good. I’ll try the next one, too!

Who would suspect that the same mind that created the most famous literary detective of all time also took on the eternally popular genre of vampires? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a contemporary of Bram Stoker, gave us some fascinating works of vampire fiction. From the bloodsucking plant in "The American's Tale" to the bloodsucking wife in "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," he reveled in the horror created by creatures who survived on the blood of men and women.

Misleading
Revisado: 10-23-20
This was a huge disappointment:
The narrator’s attempts at accents were ludicrous and even annoying;
the foreword was missing; and
the term “vampire” in the title was misleading (seriously, y’all, The Ring of Thoth” is a mummy story).
Worst—not all the stories were written by Doyle!
Definitely returning this book!

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Just One Thing Missing (but not really)
Revisado: 09-07-20
This was both enjoyable and edifying; I found it quite enjoyable. Dr. Barnhart (by the way, are you FROM Barnhart, TX?) is knowledgeable and has a pleasant style of presentation.
I listened to this on my iPhone, and throughout the course I found myself wishing for maps and, less often, photos or diagrams. Also, Dr. Barnhart occasionally mentioned that the listener was “watching” his lecture.
Of course, after finishing the course, I learned that there is an associated PDF with—you guessed it—maps, photos, and diagrams. However, I can’t find a way to access this file on my phone. If I’d been able to see it on my phone, I would have given this an overall 5-star rating.

Narration Makes a Delightful Story Tedious
Revisado: 03-12-20
I love the Aunt Dimity stories--so much that I decided to get the Audible versions even though I've already read them.
If I'd never read the books, there's no way I'd like them after listening to this narrator. She seems obsessed with enunciation. She makes slang sound ridiculous, Her accented characters (Scots, Bostonians, British) sound awful.
I am planning on buying the next book in the series...but if the narration hasn't improved, I'll return it.

There's Nothing Exactly Wrong With This Book, But.
Revisado: 03-31-19
I wish I'd started reading this soon after I purchased it, so that I could exchange it. There's nothing exactly wrong with it, and the magical concept is intriguing, but I simply am not enjoying it. So far, and I'm more than halfway through, there is absolutely nothing surprising about it, and I won't be finishing it.
