Historia
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

Aptly titled!
Revisado: 04-17-25
Like others, I had a lot of strong and mixed emotions about this bookmark It's full of broken characters who live and grow up in terrible circumstances. There is no positive role modeling or parenting, setting the stage for both Wavy and Kellum in their dysfunctional relationship and their version of love. It was very sad but also just gross at times. The graphic sexual scenes with a 14 year old were stomach churning and clearly pedophilic, but they accurately depicted how poor their boundaries were, based on upbringing. I didn't like the ending with regard to their relationship. It was just WRONG.

Historia
In September 2007, Elissa Wall, the star witness against polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, gave captivating testimony of how Jeffs forced her to marry her first cousin at age 14. This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

Excellent insider view
Revisado: 03-30-25
Highly recommended book for an inside look at the FLDS church member and how she escaped. I've read books about Warren Jeffs before but this one showed a new perspective. I've always been fascinated by cults and am glad justice prevailed.
The narrator's voice is very childish and took some getting used to.
The only thing I disagree with was the assertion this is only about child abuse and not religion. This is a religion that espoused child marriage, and thus, child abuse. It's intricately intertwined.

Interesting but way too long
Revisado: 01-21-25
This book could have been half its length. The author provides good contextual information about the discrimination against Jews at this time, which I was completely unaware of. But he went into way too much detail, and much of the information sounded repetitive. Some of the information simply didn't seem relevant to the plot. It was very hard to finish this book. I'll unfortunately be returning it.

Just ok
Revisado: 12-04-24
This is the first book I've found about DP camps, so I thought it would be very interesting. However, it focuses much more on the 3 women who volunteer there. Although the author went into depth with their backgrounds, the characters didn't feel very developed. Then it descended into rather juvenile romantic plots that were not believable. The end was very contrived with everything wrapped up too neatly. The narrator did a good job with the female voices but the foreign male voice she used was very monotone and sounded the same for each man.

Historia
The passionate and tragic story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the high points of 19th-century Romantic literature. In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention and an instinct for poetry and the darkest depths of the human soul in torment.

If I'd known what a great book this classic is, I would have read it much sooner. The plot was great and the narrator made it come to life. The personalities with the histrionics of Katherinex the whining of Linton, and the sneering of Heathcliff were priceless!

Excellent research but scathing towards Christians
Revisado: 09-06-24
I didn't know much about this subject of Christian nationalists. The author, who clearly says he's an atheist, did a great job pointing out historical facts to show America was not founded on Christianity. I learned a lot about how religion became interjected into politics over the years. However, as a Christian (but NOT a Christian nationalist) I didn't like the complete and repeated misinterpretation of various Scripture and the condescending tone towards those of us who believe in God. That was unnecessary. Unfortunately, the author has had too many bad experiences with people who call themselves Christians but then use profanity and tell him he will burn in hell. These hypocrites are the ones who give Christians a bad rap.

Not really about Whitney
Revisado: 07-28-24
I was in high school when Whitney's songs were first played on the radio, and instantly was hooked. I was looking forward to this bio but was sorely disappointed. As others have said, this is so political and racial. It puts a racial spin on everything and covers way more about other topics than Whitney. It's actually very shallow in covering her life, and extremely repetitive. I couldn't finish it.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This was such a fun book, although it deals with serious topics of grief and abandonment. The talking octopus is the highlight of the story. The narrator is perfect with his snooty, sarcastic demeanor. Highly recommend!

Superficial story with terrible narration
Revisado: 01-13-24
I had to grit my teeth to finish listening to this. I'm not an Elvis fan but wanted to hear Priscilla's story. As others commented, her account provides an extremely superficial story of her life with Elvis. I cringed at her reading as a starry eyed 14 year old who just wanted to please Elvis. That tone continued throughout until almost the end. It was so convenient that she left out how he was 24 when they met. She seemed to think there wasn't much wrong with him feeding her pills and influencing her parents to let her live with him as a 16 year old. So disgusting and inappropriate. And yes, shame on her parents for being so ignorant, if not stupid!
The giggling, laughing, and chuckling throughout quickly became like fingernails on a blackboard. So annoying and immature sounding, especially some of the things she laughed about. Priscilla sadly sounds like she never matured. If you're insistent on reading this book, then actually READ it and don't listen to it.

Historia
In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career - six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, 20 Wimbledon championships, 39 grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes". She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Good autobiography
Revisado: 09-14-23
Overall, I enjoyed hearing about Billie Jean's life, spanning from childhood until 2021. She grew up in a very different era and culture with regard to women's rights and gay rights. I enjoyed hearing about her marriage to Larry, the relationship with Marilyn, and her current wife, and how that was woven into her tennis stardom.
However, parts of the book seemed long and tedious, especially near the end. I didn't care for all the political discussions and coverage related to more current events, although it would be hard to ignore them given the LGBTQ topic.
I also wasn't a fan of her narration, and have rarely found cases where authors are excellent narrators. Billie Jean's voice is very raspy and hard to listen to for extended periods. She did not enunciate well, and her narration was also halting throughout. However, I enjoyed her genuine emotions and laughter that came through.
