Historia
Is your workplace riven by tribal conflict? Are your meetings governed by dozens of unspoken rituals? Is there something faintly religious about the way your colleagues worship the CEO? If so, then you might need a lesson in business anthropology. For a century, anthropologists have had an unusual method: immersing themselves deep inside 'alien' tribes and uncovering, from the inside, how they tick. Today, a new generation of anthropologists are using this approach to explain modern businesses - revealing the hidden rituals that define what we buy, who we sell to and how we work.

Too many repetitions. The person reading emphasizes some passages like if she were reading fairy tales to kids.

Historia
The principles of the French Revolution remain the only possible basis for a just society - even if, after more than 200 years, they are more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the listener in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society.

Excellent historical work, extremely well researched.

The most atrocious pronunciation of French words, names and places I ever heard, almost offensive I would say.

This magisterial history - sure to become the definitive work on the subject - recasts the Enlightenment as a period not solely consumed with rationale and reason, but rather as a pursuit of practical means to achieve greater human happiness.

A must read on the history of Enlightement
Revisado: 08-14-22
I greatly enjoyed this book. The huge erudition of the author and the depth of the analysis is enormously valuable to understand this historic period, especially for Europeans. I bought also the paper version to come back to some sections that were particularly interesting or (see below) difficult to understand. Overall, a rare gem in the landscape of cultural histories.
Unfortunately the narrator leaves much to be desired. Especially the pronunciation of the numerous German, Latin and French citations is simply atrocious (especially for someone who speaks all three languages) and ruins entire sections of the book where the listener has to mentally stop to think what the narrator meant, instead of following the narration.

Historia
We have all seen, whether live, in photographs or on postcards, some of Claude Monet's legendary water lily paintings. They are in museums all over the world and are among the most beloved works of art of the past century. Yet, ironically, these soothing images were created amid terrible personal turmoil and sadness.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-13-19
Ok, this book is read for English-speaking people, but occasionally some Frenchman may try to learn some English. Unfortunately he/she may not even recognize the few French words as the pronunciation is often so totally wrong.
A 15% slow-down in the reading speed may also have positively accentuated and dramatized the few remarkable passages in the story.
On the overall story, I also have grave reservations. It seems that the author has collected a great number of cards with the entire life of Monet in small episodes, has then spent a drunken week-end shuffling them around in the most absurd order and then sat down to write the story in that order. I have never seen any biography with less structure, logic or unity.
The story continuously goes back and forth in time, location, and characters. A mess!
I must admit that I have abandoned the book after three chapters, as I can find no unity and no pleasure in the entire story.

Historia
This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna.

Absolutely beautiful.

Simply the best biographical novel I ever read. I own both the audio and the printed version of the book and I would recommend them most warmly to anyone.
