The Love Continues
Revisado: 04-08-25
When Gyles suddenly disappears in The London Rose, I knew there was a juicy story behind his quick exit, and boy was I right!
I listened to the audiobook of The Paris Footman, and I adored the narrator’s voice, who does a masterful job of bringing this story to life. The characters are engaging, and it was so nice to see Gyles get his happily ever after as he was a favorite of mine from The London Rose. Though this novel can stand on its own, I do feel like the depth is greater felt by reading the first book in the series as they both tie into one another seamlessly, thanks to the incredible writing talent of Rosanne Lortz.
Having first read The London Rose, it was a refreshing take to see the story told from Louisa and Gyles’ perspectives while also telling their unique story. The flow of this novel is deliciously satisfying as it almost takes you back through book one through a different lens. This was not what I was expecting at all, but I found it quite entertaining nonetheless.
Seeing what Louisa was going through puts her in a more favorable light than she was in the first book and I was pretty surprised with how intense the final confrontation was. Listening to the book on Audible made it all the more vivid in my imagination and really put me there. I especially loved the happily-ever-after with this novel as it felt more deserved since it had already been building since the first book.
The Kendall House series has been such a joy to read so far, and The Paris Footman was no exception. I can’t wait to see the story continue in book three!

So Cute!
Revisado: 10-10-24
This was such a cute start to a new series!
This is the first novel that I’ve read by this author, and I fell in love with her writing style and overall storytelling. I liked Emma from the start with her astute and playful personality and love that the murder mystery began quickly, seeping you into the charade swiftly. There are quite a few players quickly thrown in but the impressive writing and energetic narration by the talented Gillian Wiggin made it feel seamless and coherent. I quickly fell in love with the Sweetbriar Inn and all of the cast of characters, especially Emma’s aunt Rose, the always professional Sheriff Cal, and the adorable four-legged friends Thatcher the corgi and Tim the cat.
I enjoyed the overall mystery though I figured out who was behind the shenanigans before the final reveal. Honestly, it didn’t even matter. I loved the ending so much and it’s got me hungry for more from this series. I think that the experience from some books is enhanced when you can listen to them and The Sign of the Calico Quartz is a great example of this. Listening to the audiobook really brought this world to life and it was so fun following this mystery while I handled household chores. It made cleaning so much more enjoyable and was overall a pleasure to listen to.

Simplistic Yet Engaging
Revisado: 04-20-24
I am fairly new to the audiobook world and was excited to listen to my first western!
The first thing that caught my attention when I started listening was the simplistic yet engaging writing. There is a kind of innocence that you feel when you’re listening, which was a nice change of pace from what I’ve been reading lately. The narrator has a nice voice that matches what I imagine Carsten would sound like, which heightened the audiobook for me. It’s like he’s telling his own story, which was really neat.
I do wish the narrator would’ve had a bit more emotion behind his voice. A lot of the time I felt like it felt flat and devoid of emotion, though I know Carsten and other characters conveyed many emotions throughout the story. I also had a hard time keeping the different narrators straight, as the narrator did not change his voice enough to make the different characters distinctive, at least for my ear.
It is clear that Carsten is a sweet soul but because of the sins of his past no one will let him prove that he is a changed man no matter what he does. This to me was so frustrating as I was listening. Who wants to have their sins constantly held over their heads, especially when they have repented? I do feel like despite the conflict this was a surface-level story and would’ve liked to have seen more internal thoughts and emotions explored.
Carsten with his group of friends were some of my favorite moments. I love the light, witty banter and seeing how they support Carsten is a nice juxtaposition to the other townsfolk that are suspicious and judgmental of poor Carsten. There is a moment where grace is acted out and it was my favorite moment and something I always appreciate in stories like this.
I left this audiobook with a pretty sweet message. Trusting God and others when things seem bleak can be one of the hardest things to do, but boy oh boy can God do some amazing things when you do.

This Novel Came Alive!
Revisado: 03-05-24
I am a sucker for a good Regency romance and the Allen Abbey Romance series begins with Then Gentleman in the Ash Tree. I loved how this story started. Anytime I read a Regency romance where someone is acting outside of societal norms and gets caught in the act is always so entertaining to me. Too many characters during the Regency era are such stuff shirts that moments like these are a refreshing reminder that these people were human. This is also what first endeared me to Eloise. Her character was easy to love, and from the moment she meets fun-loving Crispin I knew this was going to be an instant favorite.
Honestly, this is one of the most entertaining Regency romances that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Not only did I read the novel, but I also listened to the audiobook, which added so much to the narrative, in my opinion. I adored the narrator’s voice as it was so incredibly soothing to listen to and the fact that it is paired with such an entertaining story heightened the experience, truly making the novel come alive.
This is an incredible start to what I’m sure is going to be an amazing series.

These last two stories in the series are about Jackie's relationship with two rare people. One took me to his club, where Jackie and Brooke Astor were among the first female members. The other told me about accompanying Jackie to India, where together with her husband they travelled as a threesome.

A Fascinating Story Indeed
Revisado: 06-08-23
Jackie Stories continues with stories 7-8, An Expert in the Ballet World and A Harvard Professor’s Wife, both quick and intriguing. I like how you can listen to the entire audiobook in one sitting, but I do wish the stories were a tad longer. Learning more about Jackie is always fascinating to me and I feel like these stories just skim the surface when I am craving a deeper dive. I know these audiobooks are to point you to the author’s main text, Reading Jackie, but I do wish there was more here.
From learning about Jackie being approachable, which goes against what many have always presumed, to her relaxed way of traveling India with an expert in Indian art and artifacts when you would assume she would be her more couture, regal self is refreshing to hear. It’s these little known facts from those that knew her best that make these audiobooks worth a listen.
Adding to the tone of the two stories was the narrator’s always soothing voice and perfect cadence. It still throws me that the narrator is female and the author is male, (for some reason this bothers me) but this is just a personal preference, and I still enjoyed the listen nonetheless. I am currently listening to another Jackie Stories as I write this, and I can honestly say that I am enjoying this series so far. It does lend to a deeper understanding of Jackie, while also shining a light on those that shared her life with her. A truly fascinating journey indeed.

For many people, Jackie was beyond criticism. People who came from her own background, however, were often more detached. They could be more forceful with her and sometimes more openly critical of her than others were. Nan Talese was one of the most important people in American publishing at the end of the 20th century. Nan and Jackie both grew up as bookish debutantes in and around New York. When Nan and Jackie worked at the same publisher in the 1990s, a muted rivalry arose between them.

Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 04-18-23
Jackie Stories 2-3 was a quick story that I listened to while getting ready during our family’s spring break vacation. It was the perfect thing to pop on while putting on my makeup, setting my mind onto the publishing world of yesteryear and thoughts of Jackie, someone I’ve always admired and secretly wanted to emulate. It was pretty cool getting a glimpse of the behind the scenes thoughts and notes from the author’s research for his novel “Reading Jackie.”
These are two stories from two people who were in Jackie’s life, Nan Talese, one of Jackie’s longtime colleagues, and Louis Auchincloss, a distant cousin and someone who knew Jackie early in her adult life. It was so neat getting to hear stories that I have never heard before about a woman that I greatly admire, helping me to see a side of her I did not know before.
Adding to the tone of the stories was the narrator’s soothing voice, though it did tend to throw me, as the author is male, and the narrator is female, but I still enjoyed the listen nonetheless. I have several other Jackie Stories that I am currently listening to and really love this series.

Such a Fun Listen!
Revisado: 01-21-21
Let me preface this review by saying that I am a straight up newbie when it comes to audiobooks. I've listened to a few but I struggled to stay focused (thanks ADD!) and gave up, but I am back and giving a different genre a shot in hopes of finally being able to finish an audiobook.
The Fruitcake Challenge is my first "read" by Carrie Fancett Pagels, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The heroine, Jo Christy, is addressed numerous times throughout the book as Ms. Christy. My name being Christi as well gave it a cool little twist for me, really helping me to put myself in Jo's position, and to become immersed in this world.
Poor Jo is in a world full of lonely lumberjacks and not very many women. Proposals and perusals are plentiful but are warded off by Jo's two older, and very protective, brothers. That is, until Tom Jeffries, the new, confident and incredibly handsome lumberjack, comes into town, catching Jo's eye, and leaving her unsure about how she feels about him. Tom is unimpressed with Jo at first glance, but decides to offer a challenge to the camp cook: if she can make a fruitcake "as good as the one my mother makes" then Tom will marry her. Jo, intent on bringing this cocky lumberjack down a peg, rises to the challenge, and it is this challenge that changes everything.
I adored the banter between Tom and Jo, loving the funny parts, but also appreciating the serious parts as well. At first, the narrator's voice was a little stiff for me, but once I got a few chapters in I really started to enjoy listening to narrator Virginia Gray, her male and female voices wonderfully done, helping to paint a wonderful picture of The Fruitcake Challenge and Tom and Jo's story.
I will say, audiobooks are redeemed for me, thanks to The Fruitcake Challenge. Will they replace actual books for me? No, but I still enjoyed the experience nonetheless, this novella so witty and sweet, the lightheartedness exactly what I needed during this season.
