It's Old but it's Amazing.

Described as a "tour de force" in many a book description they do not underrate it at all. This book is a journey, a journey you'll not want to end and can't wait to end at the same time because you have to know what happens. When you start you care about none of the characters at all. In the middle you think you have favourites and by the end you can't separate who you like and don't. They're all wonderfully written, real and voiced different. The voice actors did a great job to make each voice unique and make each really fit the characters. I'd put this book of for a long time because of the age of it as some aging Sci Fi just doesn't stand up. This is not one of those. There's talk of it being made into a film and it'd be criminal to do so. As much as it'd make the book mainstream a show like GoT would suit it better. I can't think of much to relate this to personally other than another sci-fi that that's probably less famous but just as deserving: Armor by John Stakely. If you liked that I think you'll love this. If you've not listened to or read either I'd highly recommend them both but be ready for an emotional rollercoaster.

An instant favourite!

I cannot believe it's taken me so many years to finally read this book. Highly recommended it's themes and setting carry so many echoes of today's world that it's astounding but also completely understandable. How else has this book stood the test of time so far?

I highly recommend it to anyone. I was personally super sceptical but was hooked not long into it.

If you liked 1984 this is that but turned on its head in some ways and the same in others. Try it.

It'll mess you up in a good way!

This starts off slowly but builds soon into something that is just difficult to put down or stop. Yes it's a compelling story about a pastor and a serial killer but it's so much more in its philosophical questioning. If you like movies that mess with your head then this is an audiobook for you.


RC Bray is the 🐐 (g.o.a.t) so naturally performance was on point. Both narrators were great tbh.

Stop reading reviews now or you'll find spoilers just get the book already! Also, when you think you know everything.. you don't. More is coming! Keep that in mind!

What we have been waiting for!

if you've followed the series this far you, like me, have been waiting for the merry band of pirates and First-grade Asshole beer can Skippy to finally kick some ass.

NO SPOILERS but it happens. Asses are kicked, the team gets together for some of the usual impossible but not for us missions and much more.

The story is fun, something is always happening and lots of changes come to the galaxy and the team because of it.

The only downside for me really was just in the writing from time to time. I know that Craig has a penchant for repeating things but it got to me just a few times in this book. Like saying that part of Joe's job is to kiss Skippys ass so he continues to help them or, that X is a detail that stopped the plan because X is a problem and that why they couldn't do the plan. Its part of his style and happens a lot in some of the books this one I feel happened a few more times than it needed to.

Other than that it's a banger and get on in there!

Pretty good but got a bit long in the tooth

I couch this review with the fact that I finished the entire main story first so, perhaps if I had jumped over to the mech wars at the right time (somewhere in the middle of the main story) it would have been a better experience. As it is though, I just thought the series as a whole was fine but the Quatro seemed a bit 2 dimensional actually most characters just seemed to lack some of the depth I felt we got from the main series.

Great and unexpected follow up

Not like the original but a ton of fun and interesting still in its own right. Normally you expect a sequel to be average at best but I loved it. only criticism is the performance was jarring as I listened to the two back to back and the narrator changes and has a slightly different intonation that imo changes the feel of the character. Once I got over that and adjusted it was just as fun as the first.

Overall I love the characters although I can't help notice that almost all women in these stories are somewhat... over aggressive? Like they can't be portrayed as confident, competent and powerful without also somehow being super aggressive at the same time? Actually it's a pretty common theme for the series across many characters but it just feels like if the female is a main character she must be almost too tough and definitely tougher than Fergus which I find a bit weird. Maybe I'm reading too much into it though either way great series and hoping for many more books to come found a new author to dive into thanks to these two books.

Great Dramatization

Don't listen to the purists the dramatization is well done and the book is alive with the sound effects, music and more. I've never read the book and I really enjoyed this. Only criticisms I have is the sound levels at a few moments were just a little too soft. I understand it was part of the performance to put you in the place but straining to hear it was a bit of a pain. Apart from that I think it was great.

Not Legion but they still KTF

I wasn't a fan in the beginning...
The new narrator and new characters really just weren't what I'd come to expect after binging the entirety of the books from Kublar to the end of article 19. BUT, I gotta say, it grows on you. It takes time to set up, get to know the characters and where the galaxy is at but, it's well worth the wait. Overall I'm looking forward to the next book now and can't wait to see where this new season takes us.
My only real gripes are the narrators female voices aren't the best and I think one accidentally dropped in and out of an Irish accent at a few points but other than that Ray is a pro and does a good job I loved his work on the Bobiverse series and I'm sure he'll only get better.

Don't read whiny Baby Reviews

First let me get the obligatory: RC Bray is amazing out of the way. That's a given.

TLDR: valid criticisms - long awaited answers to Qs didn't have enough weight, whining over Adams is old. Sort of a filler book (personal theory is that's intentional to Joe's growth but you decide).

Non-valid whining: formulaic (half of them are get over it), Character growth non-existant (obviously wrong), cliffhanger (most of them end with one, get over it). Final mission pointless ( also clearly wrong with ant foresight)

Recommendation: Read it and enjoy a romp with your fav space pirates. Enjoy the answers and the ass kicking but keep expectations tempered for the ending.

Now let me address the whiners that I've seen the reviews for: YES this series can sometimes be very formulaic, if you hadn't grasped that or got sick of it by book six you're a bit slow to get to the table.

YES there is a whopper of a cliffhanger in here, some people don't like that, I get it. But it's pretty established writing and storytelling. Get over it.

YES Joe's pining over Adams is old and the relationship needs to develop or die.

With ALL that said most of the whiney babies reviewing this book should either a) know what they signed up for and b) Missed some of the point of the book imo.

This book is certainly the usual: a fun romp in space with everyone's favourite Beer Can and Merry Band of Pirates. What it's not though is completely original. The first half is fantastic and what we've all been waiting for but the 2nd half (really the last 1/4 I think) is a return to a similar story and problem we've seen before but now, for different reasons and with different consequences.

Characters in this book have all shown growth and change including Bishop. Book 1 bishop is miles away from current Bishop and that's shown in his knowledge and his ability to identify his own weaknesses and plan against them for long term success of the mission and humanity (ie Mario Kart, Sims, Adams). However he's not a completely different person, who of us is from our past selves?

What will stun people and what is just not earned enough in this book nor is it delivered with enough weight is the answers to all the questions we've had for so long. When we get them it's very flat and there is gravity in the moment but not enough. Personally what's lacking is the emotion of it from the characters. It's sort of delivered like someone's dog died. It's serious but it's not the same gravity as your husband or wife dying in a tragic way before your eyes. Which is the gravity this should have carries.

Overall it's not the best ending but it's definitely not the worst book of the series and doesn't deserve the excessive whining. All these "die hard fans" seem fickle if one book has rocked them sooo much they want to "quit the series". I don't consider myself die hard and I consider this book a pretty good one in the series, not the best, but definitely not the worst. That's probably book 3/4 from memory.. whenever it was obvious that we were going through the same formula.

Also Homefront was great. Stop whining about it. It was dry run for the movie Netflix is doing (apparently) and personally I think it was nice to have the atmosphere of things added.

Somehow it keeps getting better!

This is what a space opera should be: serious with some light moments, it's complex but not too much, there's moving parts and characters that develop and change as well as those that refuse to. The story seems to get better and bigger but still believable given the world it's in. I've powered through these books since discovering them a month ago and can't see myself stopping.
As usual also RC Bray is a master and I can't fault him for anything other than not narrating my life so I sound like a badass too.
