Historia
Do you find yourself hoping that someday, life will be less hectic? One day, you say, you’ll finally have time for the activities that you love–writing that book, completing that triathlon, traveling with friends. But if the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is unpredictable. If we’re not careful, dull, unfulfilling tasks can quickly occupy our precious hours, derail our best-laid plans, and make life feel like a slog.

Grateful for this book
Revisado: 12-29-22
Thank you, Laura Vanderkam, for laying out some of the most practical, liberating time management rules I’ve ever encountered. Having read other of your titles, I wasn’t sure there would be much in here that was new. But I did pick up several perspective-shifting insights, which are already expanding my weeks. I’m especially fond of the “two adventures” rule, scheduling backup time/“3x a week is a habit,” and prioritizing “effortful fun.”

Historia
Atlantic City, 1934. Every summer, Esther and Joseph Adler rent their house out to vacationers escaping to “America’s Playground” and move into the small apartment above their bakery. Despite the cramped quarters, this is the apartment where they raised their two daughters, Fannie and Florence, and it always feels like home. Now Florence has returned from college, determined to spend the summer training to swim the English Channel, and Fannie pregnant, after a miscarriage, is on bed rest for the duration of her pregnancy. The apartment is bursting at the seams.

Enchanting.

You won’t be able to forget this story or its characters. Beanland’s deftly woven tale is rich with historical details and keen observations about human nature. I loved every moment.
