Historia
Over the last fifty years, women have made extraordinary advances in athletics. More women than ever are playing sports and staying active longer. Whether they’re elite athletes looking for an edge or enthusiastic amateurs, women deserve a culture of sports that helps them thrive: training programs and equipment designed to work with their bodies, as well as guidelines for nutrition and injury prevention that are based in science and tailored to their lived experience. Yet too often the guidance women receive is based on research that fails to consider their experiences or their bodies.

Some Women's Sports History via Good Stories
Revisado: 10-18-24
Quite good overall. I love the chosen bits of women's athletics history and individual anecdotes used to lay out her position on things. Her summary of intermittent fasting as a calorie restriction method that puts the body in a stressful state does make me really question her summary of different bits of research though, hence why I can't give it 5 stars for everything (intermittent fasting does not typically restrict total daily/weekly calories and appears to stress out bodies less than more regular timing of meals and snacks).

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Well thought out characters, but little more than a love story
Revisado: 08-05-24
Good character development; I really enjoyed who they were and how their experiences and personalities shaped them. In the end, this is a love story and I guess that, to me, if that is all it is then the story lacks true depth. Obviously, I should expect a love story before I started, but I was somehow hoping for more.

Historia
Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifetstyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Taubes' book puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Inspiring Story For Low/No Carb Eating
Revisado: 07-14-24
I love how he connects it all to insulin and clearly makes the case physiologically, as well as per clinical research and practical experience of many. He really makes the point and describes why carbohydrates lead to weight gain, with the severity of this reaction varying person-to-person.

Traveling Mindsets For Women
Revisado: 05-28-24
Rather than arbitrary lists of things to pack or things to do, this book shows you what you need to think about and how to approach things for successful travel as a solo female traveler. Should be an excellent resource for my daughters, and presumably women everywhere.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Insightful Analysis of Her Family & Personal Dysfunctions
Revisado: 05-16-24
I appreciate the honesty of her imperfect family and dynamics and what that lead to in her life. It does seem to end without an ending. The author concluded that her Mom and life circumstances made her into the wrong version of what she wanted to be.
But what is her passion now? or is she looking for her new life passion? Who is she trying to be or what does she want to do now? Who does she want her closest friends and companions to be now? I imagine she does have the answers to some of these questions and I wish this otherwise well written story could have wrapped up with some of those answers.

Historia
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Great overview of the historical and cultural views of autism through the decades, and to some extent through the centuries. Mostly specifically focuses on the changing views and understandings of medical/psychiatric/psychologic researchers and practitioners.

When 24-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: At the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened?

Insightful story on an atypical major mental breakdown with the possibility, but not certainty, of a diagnosis
Revisado: 03-02-24
The author's willingness to go into her own story in depth, search for others accounts to fill in her admitted memory pitfalls, and interest in researching a big picture view after the initial critical timeframe are all impressive and make for a compelling story.

This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

I love both her general ideas of dopamine overload in the world leading to minor and major addictions. Plus she does a fantastic job of explaining her ideas and the psychological concepts that support it.

Overall Excellent, But Does Duplicate Influence
Revisado: 06-11-23
I overall greatly enjoy the information and how it is presented. But I also happened to have listened to this shortly after listening to Influence, by the same author. It is disappointing that some sections not only have similar topics and references, but seem to have nearly identical explanations and even approximate wording for extended periods.

Ancient Babylonians, timeless lessons
Revisado: 04-29-23
The story is excellent. I love imagining ancient times with ancient customs (slave holding, talks of gods, brutal true free market system) filled with normal people like all of us, always taking time and maturity to really learn that "part of what you learn is yours to keep." The pseudo-old style wording takes getting used to.
