Historia
After the war that cost him so much, Kylar Stern is broken and alone. He's determined not to kill again, but an impending amnesty will pardon the one murderer he can't let walk free. He promises himself this is the last time. One last hit to tie up the loose ends of his old, lost life. But Kylar's best—and maybe only—friend, the High King Logan Gyre, needs him. To protect a fragile peace, Logan’s new kingdom, and the king’s twin sons, he needs Kylar to secure a powerful magical artifact that was unearthed during the war.

The Narrator all but ruins this version
Revisado: 04-28-23
Brent Weeks has grown as a writer since he first debuted the Night Angel Trilogy years ago, but this audiobook suffers from two things: First: a combination of experimental style--Weeks switched from 3rd person limited story telling to first person using the framing device of a journal moving the story back and forth in time. Some people may not like the change in writing style, but that's up to the individual listener/reader.
The second thing is far worse: The audiobook's narrator. Not only is their cognitive dissonance hearing a 67-year-old British gentlemen speak like he is the 20-year-old character, Kylar Stern, it's actually impossible to understand him half the time. I do not because of his accent, but because he insists on speaking in some sort of weird husky whisper all the time. I found myself having to turn the volume up to ridiculous levels to even hear what he was saying.
I am still a huge Brent Weeks fan and I want to like this book. But I would have to suggest skipping this particular version. Either buy a physical copy and read if for yourself, or wait and hope someone comes out with a full audio-drama version with a better voice cast at some point in the future.

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art - and he is the city's most accomplished artist. For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint. But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.

The best way to experience this book
Revisado: 01-04-23
This is Brent Weeks’s first book and while it is ok it is a far cry from the level he has since improved to. But this Graphic Audio dramatization is truly exceptional and elevates it to a great listen for fantasy fans on a long commute
