Historia
In 1958 Georgia, the shade of a 13-year-old black girl's skin can make the difference in her fate. Tangy Mae is the smartest of her mother's 10 children, but she is also the darkest complected. The Quinns - all different skin shades, all with unknown fathers - live with their charismatic, beautiful, and tyrannical mother, Rozelle, in poverty on the fringes of a Georgia town where Jim Crow rules. Rozelle's children live in fear of her mood swings and her violence, but they are devoted to her. Rozelle pulls her children out of school when they are 12 years old so that they can help support her by going to work.

The most disturbing book I've ever listened to
Revisado: 03-15-19
Racism between whites and blacks is inexcusable. But there is no understanding of the racism among light skinned blacks and dark skinned blacks. This is the 1st book I've read that discusses this phenomenon.

Historia
A resident of one of LA's toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores. East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood's high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. But someone from the neighborhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can't or won't touch. They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence.

Very entertaining in both story and narrator.
Revisado: 10-20-17
One of the best narrators I've heard —a black man reading in the dialect today's blacks speak. Also, N and F words are almost constant so if that offends you, this isn't for you. The story is excellent, fast paced and never dull. Not a wasted word in the whole story. Can't wait to listen to the next one and hope there are many more.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Excellent. Well worth the listen.
Revisado: 09-01-17
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Not the typical "4 college friends" book. One of the friends is a "cutter" and I've never understood why someone would do that to themselves. This book gives a glimpse into the kind of mental pain that would drive someone to hurt themselves. It's a long book but well worth the listen.

Historia
Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light.

They wake up in a hut, hooded, bound, no food or water. Hostages. As a personal favor, John Wells is asked to try to find them, but he does so reluctantly. East Africa isn’t his usual playing field.

Curious as to how much of this is story true
Revisado: 02-02-16
After one of these books, I wonder how much of the information in it is true. In this case, I wonder if the USA would actually work with a terrorist group in order to achieve an end favorable to the USA. Also, how much of the drone technology revealed is accurate. Knowing how much money the USA gives to countries with bad actors (e.g., Iran and Pakistan) and the fact we no longer capture our enemies, we just drone them, I wouldn't be surprised to find that something similar to this book has actually happened.

Another Highly Rated Flop
Revisado: 02-02-16
I don't now when I'm going to learn not to trust reviews and stars. The writing was so so, the story a soap opera easily figured out, and the narration awful, especially the guy that read Owen. Matter of fact, both guys weren't very good. I would not recommend this book unless it becomes a daily deal.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

18 hours of horrible narrators of a boring story
Revisado: 08-22-15
After seeing this book picked so many times by Audible editors as a book of the month and year, I finally gave up and listened to it. What a waste of 18 hours. The story is about 3 people that never meet and you never really know what they have to do with each other. The story of each character is boring and the narrators border on grating on your nerves, especially the 2nd guy. The woman's voice sounds awful, and her reading is even worse. The 2nd guy sounds like he has throat problems. Just awful. But no matter how good they were, they wouldn't have been able to save such a terrible book. Especially the ending. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

4 Stars, Really ???? No See Jane Run !!!
Revisado: 10-29-14
I've read a couple other Liane Moriarty books and loved them. But this one was ridiculous. There is nothing believable in her reaction to losing 10 years of her memory. The questions she asks are not believable, the conclusions she draws from her surroundings, her reactions to people, etc. just make no sense. I quit listening to it after 10 chapters. Not wasting the time. See Jane Run a much better amnesia book. Narrator not so hot either.

Historia
The Spanish House is a mixture of designs, Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as if whoever started it had simply got bored. It has long been known as an architectural folly to locals, and is now nearly derelict to boot. When its reclusive owner dies intestate, the Spanish House is left to his city-dwelling niece. For Isabel, recently widowed, the house is a potential lifeline - the only hope she has of providing for her two children without having to sell her most treasured possession.

Hard to Believe By Author of Me Before You
Revisado: 06-19-14
Me Before You is one of my all time favs. Which is why I decided to try this book. There is no comparison in the depth of the story, writing and characters between the two books. This book is so-so at best.
