Historia
Out there is chaos, the collapse of society, and so much to be afraid of. All that matters is freedom. That’s what Remy Blake has been taught by his survivalist father. Raised off the grid in the middle of nowhere, his own survival skills not yet honed, Remy is days shy of his eighth birthday when his father unexpectedly dies. As seasons pass, supplies run out, and fending for himself grows more desperate, Remy sets out on foot, unprepared for the great unknown of civilization.

Historia
In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration commissioned an oral history of the remaining former slaves. Bullwhip Days is a remarkable compendium of selections from these extraordinary interviews, providing an unflinching portrait of the world of government-sanctioned slavery of Africans in America. Here are 29 full narrations, as well as nine sections of excerpts related to particular aspects of slave life, from religion to plantation life to the Reconstruction era.

How wonderful that the Works Progress Administration had the foresight to collect the life stories of these former slaves. There is no replacement for hearing history directly from those who experienced it.

A Walk in a Pioneer Woman’s Shoes
Revisado: 07-08-22
Some of this book’s reviews criticize the formal language, bland delivery, and terms like savage used repeatedly to describe the Native Americans. If you read it, keep in mind that this is a narrative not a story for entertainment. It is history as she saw it at that time. For the period that it was written, it is totally appropriate. Mrs. Kelly endured events and situations that she mostly likely could never imagine before they happened. She suffered much grief and stress. The things she witnessed were likely much more brutal than her descriptions can convey. Due to conventions of the time, there are topics she cannot cover in detail. I highly recommend this if you can walk in Mrs. Kelly’s shoes as you read it. Perhaps picture yourself captured by a group you consider terrorists. You are in a country not known to you, taken captive by those with different beliefs from your own, starved, terrified, beaten, and removed from all you know after you watched the families in your group be murdered. Read this open to feeling as Mrs. Kelly did as you absorb her experience. My comments here have nothing to do with the wrongs committed during the settlement of this country and everything to do with just listening and learning from the experiences of others.

While I enjoyed the story itself, playback issues with the character of Jane around chapter 40 and beyond made it difficult to enjoy.

What a stunningly beautiful book! I listened to the Audible version while reading the book and looking at the illustrations. If I could raise my children all over again, we would read this every night. It is a lovely book for adults as well, don't miss it.

But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Historia
Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves - but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995. This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves. Wolf 8 struggles at first - he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied - but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot.

Fall in Love with the Wolves of Yellowstone All Over Again
Revisado: 11-30-19
Wonderful insight into the behavior of the the Wolves of Yellowstone National Park and wolves in general through the stories and detailed observations of Rick McIntyre. Rick has devoted most of his life to observing wolf behavior and educating the public on wolves. Take some time to read or listen to this book and learn about a creature long misrepresented in literature. Thank you for the journey Rick! My one caution: the Audible version of this book is read with a slightly robotic voice. It did not bother me, but I could imagine the joy and concern in the diction having seen the wolves myself. If this is a concern, individual readers may prefer a hard copy.

First, though, he'll need to grasp his own truth: that he can't embrace his future until he comes to terms with his past.

Absorb Yourself in the Reality of a Young Boy in an Past Era
Revisado: 10-03-19
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Weinstein at a bookstore in Ponce City Market in Atlanta and he convinced me to give his books a try. Hardscrabble Road is the first of the four books that I have read and I’m happy to have taken this chance.
While Hardscrabble Row may not be written about any one real individual. It is a tribute to an era not long past, but foreign to many today. The vivid descriptions brought to life the experiences of a young boy growing up during harsh times in rural Georgia. Indeed, you will feel the warm sun pounding on your head and the pine straw under your bare feet as vividly as the sweat that comes from fearing an adult who has little control over himself but every control over you. In it, I glimpsed a little of my father’s childhood and what made him into the man he is today.
If you are willing to sink yourself into a story and really feel the hardness that made small joys seem so sweet in Roger’s (or someone like him) world, I highly recommend Hardscrabble Road.

My Personal Favorite of the Series
Revisado: 08-10-19
Another fun and light Liz Talbot Mystery but with a serious background topic of domestic abuse. Since I live in Mount Pleasant, SC, I thoroughly enjoyed the references to actual restaurants/places in the area. I could also see how giving women in the area could provide support to others in need. Excellent read.
