Historia
There is a vast class of things that science has so far almost entirely neglected. They are central to the understanding of physical reality both at an everyday level and at the level of the most fundamental phenomena in physics, yet have traditionally been assumed to be impossible to incorporate into fundamental scientific explanations. They are facts not about what is (the actual) but about what could be (counterfactuals).

Awful narration and disappointing content
Revisado: 05-12-24
First I address the narration. The reader had a good voice and pronunciation was good but the reading was robotic and annoying. I almost couldn’t finish the book.
Concerning the content, I was drawn to the book because of the forward and endorsement of David Deutsch. However, I was very disappointed in the depth and clarity of the content. It was mostly a repetitious attempt to claim that consideration of counter-factual (considering properties of systems beyond what can be experimentally manipulated) was missing from scientific practice and that including it would remedy the biggest problems in physics. Neither of these themes was adequately accomplished.

Historia
It was a day like any other. Except it was our last.... It’s on this day that Pounce discovers that he is, in fact, disposable. Pounce, a styilsh "nannybot" fashioned in the shape of a plush anthropomorphic tiger, has just found a box in the attic. His box. The box he'd arrived in when he was purchased years earlier, and the box in which he'll be discarded when his human charge, eight-year-old Ezra Reinhart, no longer needs a nanny. As Pounce ponders his suddenly uncertain future, the pieces are falling into place for a robot revolution that will eradicate humankind.

Good light sci-fi worth a listen.
Revisado: 06-30-22
Based on an interesting science fiction premise, the book explored themes of free will and personhood for AI in an interesting manner. The books main character was designed to communicate with children, and although an essential element, this resulted in the prose getting a little tedious in places. The audiobook narrator was very good with excellent voices for all the different characters.

Slow then crashes
Revisado: 06-29-22
It was quite slow but full of interesting history and reasonable analysis. I thought the last chapter marred an otherwise good read. To me, it was a long rehash of points already made.

Historia
In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

Historia
The United States is near total collapse. But 87% of the population doesn't care: they're addicted to flashback, a drug that allows its users to re-experience the best moments of their lives. After ex-detective Nick Bottom's wife died in a car accident, he went under the flash to be with her; he's lost his job, his teenage son, and his livelihood as a result. Nick may be a lost soul, but he's still a good cop, so he is hired to investigate the murder of a top governmental advisor's son.

Dated politics
Revisado: 10-05-21
I’m a longtime Simmons fan. I read many reviews complaining about the right wing politics but got the book anyway on sale. I listened to the whole thing although I speed up the narration a few times when the political rants went on too long. The worst of it was that the dire predictions of ruin due to liberal policies haven’t happened so the book is dated. If Simmons edited out the dated material it would be a good detective novel.

The characters weren’t as well developed and the pace was slower. But still interesting plot and good science fiction. I’m looking forward to the next installment!

The best book so far
Revisado: 08-22-21
The narrator for Lyria starts out too slow and emotional but improves greatly by the end. The story is deeper and the writing better than in the first 3 books (which were already quite good). Looking forward to book 5!

Historia
At an exclusive school somewhere outside of Arlington, Virginia, students aren't taught history, geography, or mathematics - at least not in the usual ways. Instead, they are taught to persuade. Here the art of coercion has been raised to a science. Students harness the hidden power of language to manipulate the mind and learn to break down individuals by psychographic markers in order to take control of their thoughts. The very best will graduate as "poets": adept wielders of language who belong to a nameless organization that is as influential as it is secretive.

Fantastic conclusion to a wonderful series
Revisado: 03-26-19
I really enjoyed listening to this series. The dialogue is warm, rich and witty. The character development is deep and engaging. The details of the life in the 17|18 century are numerous and interesting. The author is a true genius.
