Historia
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

The True Story of The Coward Brothers follows two musical brothers – one English, one American, both the illegitimate sons of dubious parentage who may, as they claim to be, "one and half-brothers" – perhaps a reference to the disparity in their height and relative talents.

Fun
Revisado: 11-29-24
So, I just finished Tolstoy’s War and Peace narrated superbly by Thandiwe Newton and in an effort to not get pigeonholed by Audible I spotted this short, quirky, laugh out loud offering written by the amazing Elvis Costello. Loved it! It is short and sweet and funny. It sounds like the cast had a ton of fun recording this.

Historia
War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

So Good
Revisado: 11-29-24
Thandiwe Newton did a wonderful job with this long, challenging, brilliant work keeping multiple character voices clear and distinct. At times the French accents were a little OTT but how can one really fault this marvelous actress and narrator? It took me 14 days to complete (I did increase diction speed to 1.25.). This was my 104th book of the year on Audible and Thandiwe’s voice is superb. Thank you for your hard work with this novel.

Historia
Steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin has had more broken bones than he cares to count, but it seems his latest injury could very well bring his days on the race course to a screeching halt. But that’s the least of his concerns when his brother turns up dead, leaving Derek as the sole inheritor of his estate. It doesn’t take long for Derek to learn that his brother—a magistrate who imported and sold semiprecious stones—was keeping more than his share of secrets.

Historia
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

Riley- your love for your mom shines through every line. The words your mom left helped demonstrate the complexities of her life, the tragedies that shaped her world and the deep love she had for her children. This was so powerful on audible, hearing your voice, Julia Roberts and those precious recordings of your mom. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Should be required reading for parents of young children
Revisado: 08-22-24
I think we all witnessed teens and young adults who are anxious. withdrawn and unable to cope with everyday issues and slights.
Those for whom “ trigger warnings” are issued by teachers.
Those who can’t hold a conversation.
Those who appear unable to engage in routine activities without checking their phones every few seconds.
This book brings light to how damaging a phone-based childhood is and how impactful social media apps are on the developing brain of children and teens.
An excellent book to hopefully forewarn parents of young children about the dangers posed by the online world before further damage is done to the next generation.

Incredible series
Revisado: 07-14-24
All the John Wells books by Alex Berenson are superb reads, delivered with audio perfection by George Guidall. Twelve Days had multiple twists and turns, built on relationships and events evolving over multiple previous episodes. Simply superb. Getting Vinny Duto out from behind his desk was great and the support from Ellis once again showed his character.
All this series are terrific stories. You will definitely get the most out of them by reading in order so you understand how things link although each book is a well crafted standout.
I read about 100 books a year on Audible and Alex Berenson is a great writer whose characters take you along for a wild adventure. George Guidall is one of my favorite narrators. Recommended!
