A refreshing novel
Revisado: 02-02-24
How intriguing to have the 3 most famous detectives in history solving crimes in present day NYC. I loved the different storylines/cases - they were well designed and told. I would read another novel with these characters! They have a promising future.

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

This is the touching story of how Tolkien keeps Christmas alive for his children. I wish I had small children to do this with. My drawing would be elementary in style, but oh, the fun and joy this brings to mind!

Historia
Air Force pilot Captain Carlyle "Smitty" Harris was shot down over Vietnam on April 4, 1965 and taken to the infamous Hoa Lo prison—nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton." For the next eight years, Smitty and hundreds of other American POWs—including John McCain and George "Bud" Day—suffered torture, solitary confinement, and unimaginable abuse. It was there Smitty covertly taught the Tap Code—an old, long-unused World War II method of communication—to many POWs. In turn, they taught others, and it quickly became a way for POWs to communicate without their captors' knowledge.

A must read
Revisado: 09-24-20
I do not consider myself a reader of books about wars, but I do enjoy a good biography. This is both and it is magnificent! A thoughtfully presented book sharing both the POW and his wife's POV for 8 years of the war in Vietnam. The strength, courage, character, and faith that helped the POW's make it through this difficult time and bond them forever makes this a must read for everyone.

Historia
Meet Denver, raised under plantation-style slavery in Louisiana until he escaped the “Man” in the 1960’s by hopping a train. Untrusting, uneducated, and violent, he spends 18 years on the streets of Dallas and Fort Worth. Meet Ron Hall, a self-made millionaire in the world of high-priced deals—an international arts dealer who moves between upscale New York galleries and celebrities. It seems unlikely that these two men would meet under normal circumstances, but when Deborah Hall, Ron's wife, meets Denver, she sees him through God's eyes of compassion.

I was reading this for book club and almost stopped. Two other member encouraged me to get past the first five or six chapters. I persevered - OMG - so glad I did. This is the story of a man and his wife, a homeless man, and the impact they have on each other and their world. Everyone really needs to read this book.

Historia
As a teenager, Mallory O’Meara was thrilled to discover that one of her favorite movies, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, featured a monster designed by a woman, Milicent Patrick. But for someone who should have been hailed as a pioneer in the genre, there was little information available. For, as O’Meara soon discovered, Patrick’s contribution had been claimed by a jealous male colleague, her career had been cut short, and she soon after had disappeared from film history. No one even knew if she was still alive.

A women's right book
Revisado: 12-07-19
The story of Milicent Patrick eventually gets told, but it is more of a story about Hollywood's gender injustices. I don't think there really was enough material on Milicent Patrick, she even states that she wondered that, so she sprinkles in Millicent's past with the injustices that were prevalent of the times and ties it to today's issues. I loved reading about Milicent's triumph's - as a successful woman of today - not so much the rest of the book.

What a shocking story! Totally unexpected development. Storyline goes quickly. Narrator does an excellent job. Why didn't I read these stories when I was younger? Well written, full of detailed description s and excellent vocabulary.

Not a favorite
Revisado: 03-13-16
The 10th anniversary story is disappointing and confusing. If Stepanie Meyer wanted to do a role reversal story, I think she could have done better. Why couldn't Chief Swan be a woman. Changing the names only slightly made me keep trying to compare it to the original story and their character traits.
The original was and is great.

"You'd think a midnight prowler would have sense enough to get out after being discovered by a group of middle-aged women armed with flower vases. Or at least stop what he was doing. Not this one. Despite our menacing appearance, he kept opening cabinet doors and drawers. Our intruder wore what looked like a black Ninja outfit. It did not flatter. He was a bit chunky and not much taller than me. Nor did he move very fast as Gaynelle and I bore down on him like a freight train."

LOL
Revisado: 02-22-15
What did you love best about Dixie Diva Blues?
I work in the south - so I could "hear" some of my friends saying some of the exact things these ladies were saying and doing. I LOL so many times. :)
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dixie Diva Blues?
I loved the friendship bonding time. Girlfriends are like that and Virginia Brown hit it right on the head.
Did Karen Commins do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
For the most part yes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no. Audible books are my gift to myself for my long drives home. If I listen to them when I'm not driving, I 1- get nothing done at home 2 - have nothing to "read" on my drives 3 - have to buy more books. I finished this one while I was making cards :)
Any additional comments?
I felt the role of the men in the story to be a little weak - I would be in soooo much trouble if I pulled some of those stunts - I also respect my husbands enough to listen to his requests.

A Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 02-22-15
What made the experience of listening to A Crafty Christmas the most enjoyable?
I love murder mysteries and I enjoy scrapbooking and card making. So, to find a book that combined both was a bonus. There was humor and the writing was realistic. I laughed outloud while I was reading it.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
While the protagonist thought she knew who the murderer was, proving it was something else. The author did a good job putting twists in that made me want to keep reading.
What about Barbara Edelman’s performance did you like?
Her reading was good. She was consistent with the voices, but I would have liked a little more differentiation between some of the characters.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Embellish!
Any additional comments?
Enjoyed the book so much, I am looking at the series.

Would you consider the audio edition of Brisingr to be better than the print version?
I can't compare the two, I only have the audio version.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Brisingr?
Eragon learning about his parents.
Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've only heard Doyle's performances in the Eragon series, but I thought this book was his best performance ever!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
All is fair in love and war.
