Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Fun book but definitely for a younger audience
Revisado: 08-10-22
I want to start by saying Alix is a very fun, and enjoyable writer to read, and there were moments that read like Douglas Adams more than some of the hitchhikers books did. Which, while unexpected, was incredibly charming. The world built for this story was intriguing and well designed with a lot of potential. It felt like the story itself was the lame duck. Fairly predictable plot, plot convenience derived soft magic system, and a few issues with pacing in dealing with the framestory in the earlier parts of the book. But! I’m quibbling too much, I did enjoy what I read. Would maybe recommend to a high school/middle school audience though.

Ibram X. Kendi is spectacular
Revisado: 10-13-21
Like plenty over comfortable white people, hadn’t given much thought to my passive inertia as a key part of the systemic problems and roadblocks that people of color face regularly. This book does a spectacular job making me uncomfortable where I need it most, and it’s a treat to have it narrated by the author himself and get a feeling for the emphases as they were intended.

Loved the book
Revisado: 10-13-21
If I had to be nitpicky, the readers pacing felt rushed at times, but more often it was just right. The emotion and urgency felt incredibly well represented. The reader did very well.
The story is phenomenal, I had not yet sobbed while driving and would say that is the only major downside of this book.
