I'm torn ... it's hard to "like" a book about such disturbing subject matter. There was the discovery of a cold case skeleton to start us off, deliberate war atrocities, premeditated assassinations and also a random violent act woven into the story seemingly out of the blue and having little to do with the plot. I can't quite decide why McDermid included this last violent act.

Yet, it's a compelling book, with interesting characters. There are several story lines which intertwine tantilizingly close without completely joining forces.

Another compelling offering in Peter Lovesey’s Diamond detective series but without the excellent narration of Simon Preble. He was sorely missed by this listener.

I lost quite a bit of sleep listening, unable to turn off the recording, unwilling to let things be until I understood and even replaying parts of the story. I've read the full [so far] series of Horowitz and Hawthorne's adventures... featuring the detective and the author and apparently we have more to look forward to and there'll be more sleepless nights ahead. Can't wait.

Without giving anything away, as that would be unfair to readers or listeners, this mystery series features the [literary] efforts of author Horowitz inserting himself into the narrative he's constructing. His protagonist, taciturn detective Hawthorne, is at his usual enigmatic self, piecing things together through careful attention to details others miss, the facts of a murder. In this story, a neighborhood location known as the Richmond Close, is as much a character as is each person we're introduced to during the course of the story. We have "closed room" crime scenes, red herrings galore, misdirections, unreliable narrators and wry observations to keep us interested from start to finish. Who are we to believe?

It's not necessary to read the series in order to appreciate this 5th book, but I suggest it may enhance one's appreciation of the story and main characters. As for whether to read or listen to the book, Rory Kinnear is exceptionally good and his narrative interpretation is very enjoyable. At the end, Anthony Horowitz inserts himself yet again to read the credits. He adds a few comments, as is fitting in a book that convolutes the author and his protagonists.

Miller’s soothing narration against the repetitive environmental backdrop does exactly what one hopes for, quietly inducing sleep.,

In a soothing voice with just enough inflection and explanation she sets up the environmental mood. I found myself easily dozing off by the end of the 20 minutes.

A fun book of crime stories, with tongue placed firmly in a cheek. Retired language teacher 80 something Maud is fine living alone in her large Swedish apartment and taking the occasional trip. She's not one to do much socializing and is rather intolerant of annoying people, but if she can avoid them, all should be well. Unfortunately that's not always possible. When some overstep her boundaries or become too annoying to ignore, she's been known to take matters into her own resourceful murderous hands...

I really enjoy this series of pod casts, led by the wonderful Graham Norton. The books chosen to review are varied and sometimes take me outside my comfort zone, which his a very good thing. My only complaint? He talks about lists of the books discussed being available here on Audible, but I can't find the lists. Can anyone help? Surely there's some way to access the lists.

t's been awhile since I kept listening to a book well into the night, but this one kept me up. Normally, I'm not keen on serial killer stories with female victims, but this was very much character driven, coupled with what seemed to be a plausible and fascinating psychology, I was hooked. I'm now driven into reading the follow up, even though most of the plot points in this book were resolved. I enjoyed the narration, which was not over the top, without the adoption of dramatically different voices. I was able to differentiate each character.

This was a very enjoyable listen, with a bit of archeology, endearing pets, a tumble down castle holding ancient secrets, Halloween scares, murder and danger. What's not to enjoy? On top of a good story and interesting characters, I truly enjoy the narration by Sam Dewhurst-Philips for this series. He's a virtuoso with differing voices for each character. This series has more meat to it than most "cozy" period mysteries.
