A bit too Hitchcock
Revisado: 03-11-25
I enjoy Joy Ellis' Fens series, and like following the character's changing lives and loves. This plot was a bit convoluted and strained credulity at times...I was left with a lot of questions and some unexplained choices and character motives that just left me thinking hmmmm. A bit of a Hitchcockian ending that seemed unnecessary. Nevertheless, it was suspenseful and absorbing and I will continue to follow this series.

To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

Unique plot line, somewhat tedious procedural
Revisado: 11-11-24
I enjoyed listening to this extraordinary thriller/procedural and somewhat surprisingly figured out exactly what had happened fairly early on, with the help of the journal entries. Nevertheless, how the crime was accomplished was in no way anything I could guess and I waited a long time to hear the revelations. I think that early descriptions of the killer were a bit out of character...but all in all a pretty fascinating novel.

Dark Side of Scotland

This was a compelling story line that ultimately was nearly impossible to have predicted, and darker than seems necessary. I enjoy the Glaswegian accent and references and found the narrator very good, but the conclusion felt disheartening.

A revelation!
Revisado: 08-26-24
My husband and I had enjoyed the Longmire series on television, but had never experienced the book on which it is based. It has been a revelation! A book to savor slowly for its excellent writing and delightful humor, so well captured by the narrator, George Guidall. It's a virtual visit to Wyoming as well, and an extraordinary portrayal of unforgettable characters whom I am eager to encounter again in the next book in the series. Cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Original and Engrossing
Revisado: 07-26-24
As soon as I listened to Book 1 in the Atticus Priest series, I knew I would immediately have to begin Book 2...and now I am happy to use a credit for the next installment! Dawson is a very clever writer...obviously a bit of savant himself, much like his protagonist, Atticus, and the novel's main characters are all blessedly original and sympathetic enough to care about. The author knows how to end on a cliff-hanger so that readers are eager to connect the dots from book to book and to root for the chaotic but charming relationship between Mac and Atticus. Very interesting plots ...for the most part unpredictable twists and turns...Do yourself a favor and add a new author to your favorites - Mark Dawson!

Historia
Bo Tully is the sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, where law enforcement is usually pretty mundane: tracking down truants running away from school, picking up country boys who've had a few too many beers. But Tully gets a little more than the country norm when an ex-con calls with the startling news that there's a corpse draped across one of his fences.

The Blight Way was a totally unexpected delight on all levels...setting in Idaho, unique plot lines, quirky characters, and most of all a masterful narrator who captured each personality to perfection....I listened to this after having some oral surgery, and it was just what I needed...Humor IS the best medicine and I laughed or chuckled out loud all the way through....Thank you for Patrick McManus and Charles Leggett!

Callander Square is the second of Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Historia
Mount Mellyn stood as proud and magnificent as she had envisioned. But what about its master—Connan TreMellyn? Was Martha Leigh's new employer as romantic as his name sounded? As she approached the mansion towering above the cliffs of Cornwall, an odd chill of apprehension overcame her. TreMellyn's young daugher proved as spoiled and difficult as the three governesses before Martha had discovered. But it was the girl's father whose arrogant demeanor unleashed unfamiliar sensations and turmoil—even as whispers of past tragedy and present danger begin to insinuate themselves into her life.

Compulsively engaging...with a few caveats
Revisado: 09-24-23
I will definitely listen to one of Victoria Holt's other novels, as the story line does draw one in. I found that many elements of this novel were derivative and perhaps a bit anachronistic...and the narrator had a difficult time with male voices. However, the Mistress of Mellyn is an enjoyable listening experience and its denoument impressive.

Suspensful but ultimately unsatisfying
Revisado: 09-05-23
As others have noted, the story does pull you in and creates endless suspense, albeit with a load of red herrings along the way. The narrator did a great job of differentiating voices and timbre...I think if I were reading it on the page I would not have had the patience to continue at times...it's a long book that could have used some editing. I just don't think the author prepared the groundwork for the killer to be ultimately revealed as the twists and turns pointed in every directions but....Also hard to understand how so many who were really not particularly threatening to the killer had to die, and so violently....so, yes....I listened with excitement until the last few hours, and was dissatisfied by the ending.

Unlikely hero, quirky premise and satisfying resolution
Revisado: 07-06-23
This book was a real departure for me..I usually avoid novels with a focus on drugs, crooks and predictable plots. I was intrigued by the unusual approach the author took .. loved the “anti-hero “ protagonists especially and the humorous repartee between them that afforded many chuckles throughout! Characters well defined and beautifully interpreted by the performer .. Just when I’d think I knew what was to come, the author created more suspense, resulting in more realistic and often unwelcome but very satisfying outcomes.. an erudite and imaginative author whose books I will look for again!
