A compelling and well paced first installment
Revisado: 09-10-24
Really enjoyed this although I struggled a little to keep track of all the characters (my issue rather than the writing). A few really powerful and fascinating plot inflections/reveals that kept me very engaged despite a generally gentle pace that was a perfect complement to the unique setting(s). Cannot wait for the next one!!

Historia
Aboard a vast seafaring vessel, a band of prisoners and slaves, their bodies remade into grotesque biological oddities, is being transported to the fledgling colony of New Crobuzon. But the journey is not theirs alone. They are joined by a handful of travelers, each with a reason for fleeing the city. Among them is Bellis Coldwine, a renowned linguist whose services as an interpreter grant her passage - and escape from horrific punishment.

Vivid, terrifying and largely unhappy world
Revisado: 07-04-24
Amazing world building. And to avoid spoilers, suffice to say that China Mieville’s creativeness is on full display. Narration was expertly done but I found the pacing of dialogue in particular a bit frustrating, with a choppy beat that pervaded most of the voiced characters. This blurred their distinctiveness despite the other voice acting attributes like tone and gravel. I listened at 1.4x but dialogue but still found the dialogue slow. Any faster and the narrator’s voice would become too rapid. Still, a great performance (I am sure these criticisms are a matter of personal taste). Strong story with nice twists and turns, that is relentlessly and unapologetically miserable. Definitely recommend!!

Great narration for what must have been a really tough assignment, at least my impression anyway. I struggled in the middle third a bit, and it was not what you’d call an uplifting read, but certainly compelling and powerful. Strong concluding phase of the story pulls it all together impressively.

Frustrating, really tried to enjoy
Revisado: 06-18-24
Not a positive review, sorry. Couldn’t finish, got within striking distance to the end but I just couldn’t cope with any more outpourings of heart felt introspection. The conversations between the protagonists completely destroyed any hope to stay immersed in this interesting setting… cool ideas seem constantly and bewilderingly beset with overly simplistic emotional exposition (from the characters themselves) as they seem to take on the role of autobiographical narrators in some painful teen drama. Sadly quite predictable too, and the characters keep on running into each other — all too conveniently — making the world seem about the scale of a gated community. I tried to finish listening at 1.7 x but couldn’t stomach it. I am not super particular, but this was just too flawed, and despite some truly interesting concepts — there is not a chance of me picking up the sequel.

Fascinating story that builds and builds, and does not disappoint. World building feels very complete, without ever being over indulged. Wanted to stop at the first sentence, but you have to hit fifteen words. Well worth a credit.

Historia
Enter the fantastical world of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy, one of the undisputed fantasy classics of all time. Novelist C.S. Lewis called Peake's books "actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience."

Excellent voicing of a timeless tale
Revisado: 12-27-22
So you have to like intense and unusual characters, and be willing to immerse yourself in a dark, gritty, and perplexing fantasy environment. And you have to not just be tolerant of, but be hungry for, the incredible (and lengthy) descriptions of the places and people of Gormenghast. I read these as a kid, and loved them then. So yeah, biased I suppose?
