Historia
Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due.

Highest recommendation
Revisado: 11-02-22
Plot device is unique, excellent, and very effective: The story is driven through the voices of at least four people, whose thoughts and actions are alternated so as to create tension and (for me) a little anxiety. (E.g., Hurry up and file that petition for divorce!!!) It was difficult for me to stop listening -- I found myself parked in my driveway or in my garage, listening and not able to turn off the recording. This was my first (Judge) David Ellis book. I understand from reading reviews of his other books that he specializes in surprise endings -- he doesn't disappoint with this one. Very good reader. Anxious to listen to some of Ellis's other books.

Terrific story, plot
Revisado: 10-14-22
Story rolled out wonderfully. Loved Eddie Flynn, the protagonist lawyer, as well as the Prosecutor. Some unpredictable twists toward end. Haven’t checked, but I hope there are, or will be, more Eddie Flynn books. A retired trial lawyer, I heartily recommend “13.”

Historia
Fresh off his latest case, Attorney Nate Shepherd takes in some local high school football, hoping that a Friday night under the lights will give him a chance to relax with his family. It does - until the quarterback’s brother is arrested in the middle of the game. Nate jumps in to represent the brother, who stands accused of a crime far worse than anyone imagined. As the internet rains fury down on his new client and a merciless prosecutor maneuvers to put the young man away, Nate scrambles to find out what happened and why. But no one, anywhere, seems to be telling him the truth.

Realistic courtroom drama, likable characters
Revisado: 09-11-22
Another Nate Shepherd masterpiece. As a retired trial. lawyer, I thoroughly enjoyed the realistic courtroom procedures -- the strategies, the attorneys' opening statements and closing arguments, the attorneys' questions and cross-examinations, and the judge's rulings. Many likable characters, some (thankfully) reappearing from previous books. Again, Michael Stagg methodically paints an increasingly dim picture of Shepherd's client's prospects at trial. How the heck can Shepherd get his client off??? Highly recommend, along with Stagg's other Shepherd books. And Newbern, the reader, excelled again.

Another terrific Stagg legal mystery
Revisado: 09-03-22
Interesting characters. Gotta love Nate Shepherd. As always with Stagg, the plot was suspenseful with a surprising twist at the end. Once again, the reader (Newbern), with his varying tones and voices, was excellent in bringing to life all of the characters, with each's idiosyncrasies. As a retired trial attorney, I greatly appreciated and enjoyed this author's accuracy and real-life progression of the courtroom procedures (e.g., both attorneys' strategies for and examination of each witness, their objections, the judge's rulings, and the judge herself). Highly recommend.

I highly recommend this book not only for its plot and many likable characters, but -- as a retired trial lawyer -- also for its realistic courtroom strategies, procedures, witness examinations, objections, judge's comments and rulings, and arguments. Am anxious to listen to Nate Shepherd, Book 2, which i just loaded to my IPhone.

Historia
Frank Machianno is a late-middle-aged ex-surf bum who runs a bait shack on the San Diego waterfront. An affable Italian with a love of people and life, he's a stand-up businessman, devoted father, and a beloved fixture in the community. He's also a hit man - specifically, a retired hit man. Back in the day when he was one of the most feared members of the West Coast Mafia, he was known as Frankie Machine.

Loved all the gansta names and histories
Revisado: 06-17-20
I have now finished listening to two of Don Winslow's books and rate each 5 stars. He's climbing to the top of my audio list. Both readers were excellent and the stories held my interest (with no wanting to hurry the soundtrack for some boring or trite moments). For Frankie Machne, I loved all the names Winston gave to the scores of gangstas, along with his detailing of so many of their backgrounds and sins. I very much enjoyed Frankie's history through flashbacks, and his current life and troubles. I was pulling for him at every turn. I highly recommend Frankie Machine.

Very good except for the last 30 minutes
Revisado: 06-04-20
Excellent incites from a former Navy Seal about being a Seal and realistic tactics, fighting, weapons, and life after being a Seal. The story was a bit tedious and probably could have been cut by at least an hour's listening. But the dialogue and plot were very good, if a little trite in the sense of usual wealthy families and almost everyone being an expert in something. Of course, the author needed to have Reese kill the man who ordered the murder of his father, but should have done it another way instead of the last 30 minutes of the book, which were not credible -- trekking 1200 miles across Siberia??? Still, I recommend the book.

One Of the Best Police Dept. Stories
Revisado: 05-31-20
Reader was excellent -- fast pace of his speech and the dialog, right-on accents and inflections. NY City dialog and descriptions of places in the city were outstanding. Plot was very good -- Winslow had me rooting for a corrupt cop!! Realistic portrayal of police officers, their ranks, and politicians. Very highly recommend.

Agree: Valley Giirl talk is very annoying
Revisado: 03-30-20
Like another reviewer, I coudln't listen to at least two of the speakers because I find Valley Girl talk very, very annoying. So I used the 30-second fast forwrd to move on to the next speaker. Also was not very interested in their views and reactions. But thank you, Audible, for trying. Surely you can find less annoyng speakers next time.
