A lot of parents say that revisiting the state of childlike Wonder is one of the best things about raising a child. I remember feeling like things which had become trite or unimpressive were suddenly oh so mysterious and exciting.

There is an undercurrent of endless possibility in just about everything a young person has to say.

It is with this perspective that Alex begins a wild ride through what it means to cut your own path when the existing one is overcrowded or where one does not seem to exist. It would be easy to dismiss the child-like wonder with which he approaches his investigation of successful people in our society as naivete.

However, at the same time I was reading the third door, I was also reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, who is a middle-aged woman. She approaches the world the same curiosity and reverence of being in a state of awe and wonder. she agrees that finding your own unique path is the only real way to find fulfillment.

By the time the novel ends, Alex has questioned the advice of his mentors and heroes, acknowledged many of his mistakes along the way. He has taken a deep dive into self reflection, and opened himself up to feedback and redirection.

Yes, he is still a little too starry eyed about wealth and fame for my taste, but his acknowledgments brought tears to my eyes. By the book's end he came to recognize values he maybe had taken for granted: the power of love, the strength of friends and family, and the importance of broadening your horizons.

My kid loved the simple story, which we started when she was sick in bed... but I can't help but be confused as to why the cats steal just to return items at all much less the rest of the plot... overthinking it for sure but I guess I prefer kid's books with some meaning.
