Should be required reading for anyone concerned about improving the safety net and addressing inequality. This is especially true of those who are among the elites.

Historia
Being the parent of a gender-questioning child is confusing. There have been many books for parents who are facilitating a child's gender transition, but almost none for parents who decide that social or medical transition is not the best option for their child. Written by three professionals working in the field - Sasha Ayad, Lisa Marchiano and Stella O'Malley - When Kids Say They're Trans is explicitly a resource for parents who want their children to flourish, but do not believe that hasty medicalisation is the best way to ensure long-term health and well-being.

This is an excellent combination of accumulated wisdom from 3 therapists. The world has needed a book like this for years. I’ll be frequently recommending it.

Historia
The Trouble with Trauma is the story of how the idea of psychological trauma appeals to the human mind. Trauma impacts many people psychologically, but the evidence on the long-term physical effect is incomplete. Theories that psychological trauma can permanently damage your brain, cause physical disease, and change your essential character have become staples of human thought worldwide.

Thoughtful push back vs. popular trauma narratives
Revisado: 03-08-22
Dr Scheeringa makes a strong case that much of what has become popular regarding “trauma” is distorted and exaggerated. He makes a lonely call for restraint.
Anyone in the field should read this and re-examine whether they have opinions based on firm science or not. It’s not a perfect book, but it offers much to consider.

Historia
Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

Thoughtful author and should be considered
Revisado: 11-24-21
This is a well organized and thoughtful book by an accomplished woman who does hold a strongly feminist perspective. It is yet another example of what we need, more high quality discussion of these issues and more free and open assessment of how we arrived in our current situation.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Thoughtful look at a complex and difficult issue. Raises serious questions about current practice
Revisado: 05-11-21
Ms. Shrier has spent considerable effort on researching this book and provides many disturbing first hand accounts. She is not hateful or taking a strident stance. Unfortunately we do not have a good database to drive medical decision making, and need further discussions to flesh out the complexities. Being skeptical seems appropriate at this time.
It is a sad commentary that ad hominem attacks and book bans serve to limit open discussion. We need more debate regarding particular facts and analysis. For those interested in this important topic, I highly recommend it.

Historia
A groundbreaking and definitive account of the widespread misdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and its serious effects on children, adults, and society. More than one in seven American children are getting diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - three times what experts have said is appropriate, making it one of the most mishandled and debated conditions in medicine.

Very good starting point to understand what is going on with ADHD
Revisado: 10-14-16
This book does a nice job of balancing the legitimate use of medication and the current situation of haphazard diagnosis and rampant over diagnosis.
Schwartz does a quality review of the history of the disorder. It is well written. This is not a book about the science or fine points of this diagnostic label, or treatment. He does not talk much about psychosocial treatment options, mentioning only CBT, nor does it talk about ecological issues contributing.

What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories.

Entertaining and authoritative, Drugged is a truly fascinating book.

Historia
Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.
