Good But With Surprising Historical Inaccuracies
Revisado: 04-04-20
I really enjoyed this book and its first person perspective of three infamous women during the later part of Henry VIII's life. I especially liked the author's take on Lady Rochford and her possible motives for throwing two Queens under a bus. What surprised me, however, is that the author states three times that Anne Boleyn was executed with an ax as her head lay on a block. It's common knowledge she was famously executed by a sword in the French style of kneeling upright. There were a few other glaring inaccuracies that I found distracting from the otherwise well written book.

Historia
Newly widowed and the father of an infant son, Henry VIII realizes he must marry again to ensure the royal succession. Forty-six, overweight, and suffering from gout, Henry is soundly rejected by some of Europe's most eligible princesses. Anna of Kleve, from a small German duchy, is 24 and has a secret she is desperate to keep hidden. Henry requests her portrait from his court painter, who portrays her from the most flattering perspective. Henry is entranced by the lovely image, only to be bitterly surprised when Anna arrives in England and he sees her in the flesh.

Much Better Read and Expected
Revisado: 01-03-20
I actually thought I wouldn't much like this book because some of the story is entirely fictional. There's no evidence that Anna of Cleves had children before her marriage to Henry VIII, That being said, it was a very interesting story. I knew almost nothing on Anna so I learned a lot. Definitely recommend it.

Historia
January 28, 1547. It is almost midnight, and the cream of English nobility hold their breath as King Henry VIII prepares to face his God. As the royal physicians wring their hands and Archbishop Cranmer gallops through the frigid night, two dispossessed princesses pray for their father's soul, and a boy, soon to be king, snivels into his velvet sleeve. Time slows, and dread settles around the royal bed, the candles dip, and something stirs in the darkness...something, or someone, has come to tell the king it is time to pay his dues.

Flawed But Overall OK
Revisado: 12-27-19
I admit I didn't like this book at first and almost called it quits about a third of the way in. The narrator very oddly spoke occasional words with what sounded like a Spanish accent and the writer's depiction of Anne's thoughts during her courtship with Henry VIII, where she's this fragile flower trying to protect her chastity, doesn't ring true with who Anne really was at all. Anne Boleyn was an ambitious, common knowledge "party girl" while part of the French Court and had at least two affairs with notoriously promiscuous men before Henry. Henry himself said he found out after he married Anne that she had lied about her virginity. And I don't think he said that just because he wanted to be rid of her. What I did like about the book was that it begins and ends with her standing over Henry's death bed, taunting and scaring the tar out of him. I thought that was a cool invention. And some of her inner dialog, especially during her last days in the Tower before execution, could very well be close to the truth of what Anne was thinking and going through emotionally. If you are interested in this book, I would almost suggest you first read "Lady in the Tower" by Allison Weir, which is a fantastically detailed non fiction account of the last days of Anne Boleyn. I think knowing all the true facts and details about Anne's last few months of life would enrich the experience of reading this book. Although you'll also be more aware of its errors. OK read, nonetheless.

In this profound and intelligent book, Fiona Robertson acts as companion and guide through the dark night of the soul, one of life’s most challenging experiences. The dark night - or spiritual emergency - is the underbelly of awakening, an aspect of inner transformation that is often minimized, misunderstood, or denied. Fiona has captured the essence of the dark night journey with compassion and clarity.

MUST Read for Anyone Who's In Dark Times
Revisado: 09-19-19
I was reading Thomas Moore's "The Dark Nights of the Soul" when I decided to listen to this autobiographical book as an accompaniment. And I frankly got at least as much, maybe more, out of this listen than the book I was reading. Ms. Robertson's personal account is so beautifully written and the words she used to describe her Dark Night experience deeply resonated with me. Her speaking voice is soft, warm and full of kindness which made it great to listen to during sleepless nights. This book helped me so immensely. High recommendation if you feel like your life is in a dark place right now.

Written with an exciting combination of narrative flair and historical authority, this interpretation of the tragic life of Catherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, breaks new ground in our understanding of the very young woman who became queen at a time of unprecedented social and political tension and whose terrible errors in judgment quickly led her to the executioner's block.

Really Great Read
Revisado: 09-19-19
I never knew much about Catherine Howard. After reading this book, I almost feel I've known her personally, it was so thorough. She wasn't just a silly stupid girl although she made some pretty stupid mistakes. She was also elegant poised and kind. Great book.
