Simplistic story, decent performances
Revisado: 11-12-23
This was simply OK in my view. Much of the story felt extremely rushed and implausible. Many times characters arrived home and instantly just go to bed - no wind down, no food, no cleaning up, just home - then bed.
The biggest issue I had was that the whole story felt horribly rushed. It went from event to event with the main lead going from starting work to being drafted in the resistance, to going in raids to being a central figure in the whole conspiracy, in what felt like a week or so.
The finale reveal, whilst interesting, felt cliched and implausible. Some of the technical aspects felt just wrong (using short wave radios) when far better, more suitable tech stacks could have been employed.
And naturally we had to have our own tiny group of rebels who have a seemingly world class hacker capable of breaching a corporate firewall in just one hour.
I wanted to like this story, I enjoyed the performances as much as I could but couldn’t help feel that if they had left out the swearing and some of the violence, then this would have been standard fare for a yet another CBS super spy procedural.
Not a title I’ll listen to again I’m afraid.

Deliciously fun listen
Revisado: 10-22-23
I totally enjoyed this chonk of a book. L. L. Starling created a novel that reminds me a bit of “Bone”: a story that starts so playfully ends up getting tied up in political intrigue.
As for the narrators, Emily Ellet gets 5 stars for her wonderful vocalizations of Lena, Sasha, the various Middletonions, and Lorne. Steve West does a wicked Imp & Goblin but I found it hard sometimes to tell the difference between Lorne and some of the other characters (although “Mirrorman” is a hard one to do when he and Lorne are conversing.
I myself had zero issues with the format of the book because part 2 has a huge amount of backstory and in reality there is very little overlap.
Really looking forward to the sequel which I read may be coming out soon.

A terrific dark antihero throwback
Revisado: 10-03-23
Bray delivers superbly narrating Bruno’s dark novel on the aftermath of a darker antihero than Batman.
The story of Reece Roberts and his alter ego “The Roach” had a nice backstory that helps define how The Roach came to be, and the demons that Roberts created then punish him afterwards.
The saying goes “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”, and that is certainly true here.
The story never lags and Bray’s gruff narrative fits superbly.
Highly recommended.

Couldn't stop listening to this one - had me gripped from the first 15 minutes.
Twista and turns a plenty in a thriller that mixes British politics with an international thriller.

Contrived and unbelievable
Revisado: 03-22-23
Whilst the actors were fine, the whole thing felt quite childish and immature.
The terrible use of the hackneyed "tape rewinding" sound was painful and the actions of the cops doing the interviews felt trite, forced and unbelievable.
I got to the end simply so I could find out what happened, but rather than be content about the "big reveal", I felt relief that I was finally done.
I'll not be listening again and was glad that at least it was free.

The complete collection of acclaimed BBC Radio dramas based on John le Carré's best-selling novels, starring Simon Russell Beale as George Smiley. With a star cast including Kenneth Cranham, Eleanor Bron, Brian Cox, Ian MacDiarmid, Anna Chancellor, Hugh Bonneville and Lindsay Duncan, these enthralling dramatisations perfectly capture the atmosphere of le Carré's taut, thrilling spy novels.

Utterly engrossing
Revisado: 06-08-22
The absolute best of the BBC Radio Drama department - these stories were exquisitely produced and taughtly written. The casting was exemplary, the music thoughtfully placed and the whole series an absolute joy to listen to.
My own only grievience was that it ended.
So so so happy I added this to my library.

On the whole, most enjoyable
Revisado: 02-13-22
OK, so some of the Brits had a bit of a hard time with the American accents (looking at you, Philip Glenister!), but overall this was a most enjoyable prequel to James Cameron's excellent "Aliens".
The only bit that irked me was changing the name of the planetoid from LV-426 to "Archon" and the subsequent use of that in Ripley's scenes on Gateway station.
That aside I was happy to go along for this ride of doom, knowing full well that it was not going to end well for the folks at Hadley's Hope.
A few vocal standouts were the Laurel Lefkow as Ripley, Maired Doherty as Newt and Colin Salmon chewing his way through each scene as Brackett.
Sure there are some idiosyncrasies between the story and the movie (the film stared there were no Colonial Marines stationed on LV-426 prior to the "Rescue Mission", in addition this story explains how adults couldn't fit into the vent system, yet much of the last act of the movie takes place in the same vents). These are minor quibbles though and that's the fault of the original novel rather than this production.
And it was good to hear the familiar voices of Mac Macdonald (Simpson), William Hope (Lt. Gorman), Stuart Milligan (Jernigan, the scavenger) and Albie Parsons (Gateway station med-tech), all of whom reprise their roles from the 1986 movie.
