great source material, TERRIBLE pirate upload
Revisado: 11-16-23
I am not positive, but it appears that somebody stole this material to upload to Audible for profit. Not the crime of the Century, but what is infuriating is that large chunks are missing and other chunks are repeated. So either they were trying to avoid copyright strikes or just couldn't be bothered to upload it properly. This is important and life-saving material, not to be abridged or handled carelessly.

The 14th century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

Revisado: 11-03-23
all the misery and horror, all the chivalry, all the pointless wars and weird religious stuff -- unbelievably complex and detailed narrative. frankly, after a while, I just stopped keeping track of all the different Kings and Dukes and Lords and constables and so on... but I loved every minute of this book. Brilliantly written.

Based on a careful analysis of the earliest Christian documents and recent archaeological discoveries, The Jesus Dynasty offers a bold new interpretation of the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity. The story is surprising, controversial, and exciting as only a long-lost history can be when it is at last recovered.

very good BUT...
Revisado: 08-06-23
fans of New Testament history will enjoy this. The performance is by the author and is not great, but it's not grating in any way, so that's no big deal. Really interesting stuff. My one complaint is that he just breezes by things at times without saying what his source is. For example, he attributes many things in his speculative storyline to "tradition tells us..." —what does that mean? Another example is when he states, point blank, that Mary was pregnant by another man when she was engaged to Joseph. While this is a more than reasonable conjecture (for a secular scholar) it is hardly settled fact. I suppose all these things may be footnoted in the book, I just wish there was more information about how he comes to these conclusions embedded in the text. That being said, it's really interesting history, and much of what he says definitely sheds new light on the nature of first century Christianity, about which almost nothing is known. Many remarkable facts you nevwr hear about.

Historia
In Writing the Big Book, William H. Schaberg presents an exciting, research-driven narrative of the history of the book, Alcoholic Anonymous, and the formative years of A.A. Granted extensive access to the group's archives along with several other sources, the author reveals the early Fellowship's conflicts and personalities, successes and failures, and dispels many of the myths found in such canonical texts as Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, and A Brief History of the Big Book.

too much about fundraising
Revisado: 04-13-23
every "friend of bill's" is very interested in the core ideas behind aa, the history, the personalities and so on. and there is a lot about that here. my hat is off to the author. but there is also pages, and pages, and pages, AND PAGES, and entire letters, and speculation, and digressions, and side notes, and conjectures, about FUNDRAISING. i get that it was a serious matter and should get some airtime. of course. but seriously, who cares about every freaking last obscure money detail? again, i understand that it is part of the story here but it takes up WAY TOO MUCH real estate. the book is arguably one of the most important spiritual texts of the twentieth century, if not the most. Why is so much emphasis given to money and the foibles of the gilded class? that is NOT the important story here.

solid thriller, really can't go wrong
Revisado: 06-17-22
Look people, I could nitpick this. Some of the twists aren't perfect or even really necessary. But overall, this is a totally solid page turner that works from beginning to end. You know how these thrillers are and on that level this is way above average. The narrator has an emotional, indignant tone through the whole thing which is a bit much but I got used to it and after a while it didn't bug me, but you might wanna sample it To make sure you can do it for a whole book.

Historia
In the tradition of John Richardson's Picasso, a commanding new biography of the Italian master's tumultuous life and mysterious death. For four hundred years Caravaggio's (1571-1610) staggering artistic achievements have thrilled viewers, yet his volatile personal trajectory - the murder of Ranuccio Tomasini, the doubt surrounding Caravaggio's sexuality, the chain of events that began with his imprisonment on Malta and ended with his premature death - has long confounded historians.

great book
Revisado: 06-13-19
Information to be found about Caravaggio is not abundant but the author wrings every bit of history he can out of the sources without ever lapsing into speculation. He also makes many discoveries that update the record. The result is a surprisingly rich portrait of the artist's life. When the author does present theories, he always qualifies them with evidence and states that the final answer is not known. The descriptions of the paintings and why Caravaggio was so important are great. The author avoids the two extremes of hero worship or scolding critique that ruin so many similar studies. The prose is brisk, listenable but never superficial. The one thing I will say is you may want to have the pictures on hand when you read this so you can have visual reference. The theme of the religious sanctity in tension with sex, violence and carnality could not be more apropos for Caravaggio and his era.
