Historia
In pre-war Prague, the dreams of two young lovers are shattered when they are separated by the Nazi invasion. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance. From the glamorous ease of life in Prague before the Occupation, to the horrors of Nazi Europe, The Lost Wife explores the power of first love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the strength of memory.

Detailed heartbreak
Revisado: 03-03-25
This novel caught my eye because in 2013 my family traveled to Prague and spent a day at Terezin. The details of the Jews in Prague slowly losing their rights and then being sent to the camps is appalling. This book was obviously very well-researched and several things we learned about in Terezin are included in the book. Disturbing but worthwhile read.

Historia
Jane has high hopes her life is about to turn around. After years of living precariously, she, her painter husband, Lenny, and their two kids have landed a stint as house sitters in a friend’s luxurious home high in the hills above Los Angeles, a gig that coincides magically with Jane’s sabbatical. If she can just finish her latest novel, Nusu Nusu, the centuries-spanning epic Lenny refers to as her “mulatto War and Peace,” she’ll have tenure and some semblance of stability and success within her grasp. But things don’t work out quite as hoped.

Interesting listen
Revisado: 02-14-25
I liked this book and learned many new things from listening. Overall the main character grated with all her lying to everyone. I felt for her but kept wishing she would start telling the truth to someone. The writing was engaging the premise brand new to me.

Imaginative, compelling and layered read
Revisado: 02-03-25
This book came highly recommended from a Ph D candidate whose dissertation I took part in. She knew that People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks was one of my all time favorites. This book is similar in subject and dual timelines but also completely different. I loved all the characters and would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries, antique books and a great read. My favorite book I have read in a long time and the audio is perfect.

Aubry Tourvel, a stubborn nine-year-old girl, comes across a wooden puzzle ball on her walk home from school. She tosses it over the fence, only to find it in her backpack that evening. When medical treatment only makes her worse, she flees to the outskirts of the city, where she realizes that it is this very act of movement that keeps her alive. So begins her lifelong journey on the run from her condition, which won’t allow her to stay anywhere for longer than a few days—nor return to a place where she’s already been.

Historia
Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art every year. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They’re the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamourous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought that he’d be one of them.

Get the actual book
Revisado: 09-14-24
This audible book desperately needed a professional reader. The author reads the book himself, and I’m not sure how this even got produced, but it was an extremely poor decision. At first, I actually thought it was being narrated by AI, it was so unnatural and stilted. The only reason I didn’t go seek out the book instead was because I had one week until my book club meeting. As for the actual content, it was very interesting and there was some very good writing. I know I would’ve enjoyed reading it far more because I would not have been distracted by the incredibly poor audible. I honestly can’t believe any publisher would put this out. Someone should’ve spoken up.

Revisado: 09-02-24
This book was very interesting and not predictable. The main character was richly written. The only trouble I had was the readers volume differed enough that I had to rewind and listen to parts again because there weee words she read too softly again and again. Otherwise it was a very intriguing story.

Historia
They were an inseparable tribe of childhood friends. Some were lost to the battles of the First World War, and those who survived have had their lives unimaginably upended. Now, at the dawn of the 1920s, they’ve scattered: to Ceylon and India, France and Germany, and, inevitably, back to Britain, each of them trying to answer the question that fuels this sweeping novel: If you have been embroiled in a war in which you confidently expected to die, what are you supposed to do with so much life unexpectedly left over?
