When he walked into my restaurant, I thought he was the hottest man I’d ever seen in person. And then he spoke. And I realized who he was. The world now knows him as John Brandt - the ridiculously wealthy, handsome, genius workaholic startup founder and tech entrepreneur. I will always think of him as the annoying geek who's my older brother’s best friend.

Clumsy
Revisado: 07-04-19
I'm going to be returning this one.
The characters felt like caricatures, and the dialogue was clunky/clumsy. The narrators did their best, but there were some pretty cringeworthy moments.
I wanted to like this. I'm always a fan of a good unrequited love story, and nerds are my people, but this was Just. So. Bad.

The narration ruined it for me
Revisado: 04-12-19
I wasn't actually able to get through this one. The story might be alright, but the narration ruined it for me. Tavia Gilbert's narration of the grandmother's voice made me cringe, and I just couldn't deal with it. I've listened to other books narrated by Tavia Gilbert, and while she's not one of my favourites, I don't usually have any issues with her. I'm not sure what was going on this time.

Historia
Silvia Undine, otherwise known as the Sea Witch, has enough of hiding. All she did three years ago was to save a child and his father, but she stands accused of causing the storm that put them in danger in the first place, and as a consequence, has been banished from her seas. Enough of that. Defying the ruler of the seas, she goes back where she belongs. Everything would be peaceful if it wasn't for the three kings who fight over, against, and for her.

Painful
Revisado: 12-19-18
The story might be alright, but it's difficult to tell given the monumental awfulness of the production. Repetitions, errors, scenes out of order, vast amounts of dead air... It all amounts to a story that is impossible to listen to. I love a good fairy tale retelling, but I can't even tell if this one is any good, because it's impossible to follow. I suppose I'd have to try reading a print version. I doubt that I will bother. I will be returning this book.

Historia
Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent - and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild. With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Awesome alternate history
Revisado: 11-14-18
I listen to my favourite books over and over, and Patricia Wrede's Frontier Magic Trilogy is one of my go-to series. I come back to it over and over. Sometimes several times per year. Since introducing this trilogy to my children, I have even more reasons to come back to it, because they love it too, and will request it (especially my 7-year-old daughter.)
I can't imagine a better narrator than Amanda Ronconi for this series. She's one of my favourite female narrators. Her characters all have distinct voices, and she makes me believe that she IS Eff Rothmer, the supposedly unlucky thirteenth child.

You won't mind listening again
Revisado: 11-14-18
My children (5 and 7) love this book, and so do I. I was a fan of Diana Wynne Jones long before I had kids. I've loved this book (and many others by Diana Wynne Jones) for years, and I was excited to share it with my children. It was an immediate hit, and we've listened together many times. Many. I should be sick of this book, but I'm not.
The characters are so much fun. Cranky, dramatic, silly, and outrageously fun. The movie is amazing, but it cannot touch the perfection of the book. Jenny Sterlin's narration is right on the mark.

Historia
Even though they attend a school of gifted students in New York City, child geniuses Louise Mayer and her twin sister Jillian have always felt alone in the world, isolated by their brilliance. Shortly before their ninth birthday, they make an amazing discovery. They're not alone. Their real mother was astronaut Esme Shenske and their father was the famous inventor, Leonardo Dufae. They have an older sister, Alexander, living on the planet of Elfhome, and four siblings still in cryogenic storage at the fertility center.

Surprisingly, works for all ages
Revisado: 11-14-18
So, the 4th book in a very adult series might not seem like an obvious choice to listen to with your kids, but Wood Sprites is not a direct follow-up to the rest of the Elfhome series, and you should definitely let your kids listen.
Wood Sprites follows the adventures of Tinker's 9-year-old twin sisters on Earth. This story actually begins several months before the events in the first book of the series. The action runs parallel to the first three books, and by the end, has caught up to the end of book three.
Anyway, I very much enjoyed this book- It's silly and fun, but it also packs an emotional punch. My children, (5 & 7) love it too. They've listened to the audio book multiple times, and also regularly ask me to read to them from this book (Seriously. Almost every day.)

Pronunciation is a problem
Revisado: 03-22-17
How could the performance have been better?
I really wish the narrator had taken the time to figure out how to pronounce certain of the words in this book. Other reviews have mentioned the mispronunciation of the word "mage", so I won't belabour that, but the narrator also repeatedly mispronounces "Sami" (She says Sam-eye instead of Sam-ee.) As with the word mage, you might think, "Well, but how often could that possibly come up? I'm sure it won't be a problem." It comes up a lot though. Probably almost as much as "mage." I've listened to, and enjoyed, other performances by Gabra Zackman, but this one made me want to shoot myself. I spent a lot of my listening time muttering correct pronunciations under my breath.
Any additional comments?
I enjoy the Five Hundred Kingdoms series, but this installment is merely "Okay." Were I to rank them in order of preference, this book would take the bottom spot.

Revisado: 06-09-10
This book is amazing. I read it in one day (and was very tired the next day) and immediately told every one I knew that they also had to read it. So, when I saw that it was available on Audible, I snapped it up right away. This is the kind of book that I could listen to even with a mediocre narrator, but that has proven to be unnecessary. Scott Brick does an amazing job. I can't wait for the sequel.
