Historia
Minor Universe 31 is a vast story-space on the outskirts of fiction, where paradox fluctuates like the stock market, lonely sexbots beckon failed protagonists, and time travel is serious business. Every day, people get into time machines and try to do the one thing they should never do: change the past. That’s where Charles Yu, time travel technician—part counselor, part gadget repair man—steps in. He helps save people from themselves. Literally.

Flat character, no plot
Revisado: 09-22-11
Feels amateurish, like a 'first book', and the narrator does little to inject humor or interest to his reading.

Historia
In this Hugo Award-winning classic, Enoch Wallace is an ageless hermit, striding across his untended farm as he had done for over a century, still carrying the gun with which he had served in the Civil War. But what his neighbors must never know is that, inside his unchanging house, he meets with a host of unimaginable friends from the farthest stars.

Solid story, does not show its age
Revisado: 09-22-11
I wasn't sure if I would connect with this one or if it would feel 'old fashioned'. I think it has stood the test of time pretty well: I cared about the main character and felt the story was original. The writing was fine, even eloquent at times. Worth the listen.

Witty, intelligent sci-fi
Revisado: 06-30-11
Well written, moves at a brisk pace, great observations of human behavior and earthly culture, and very similar to the way I would handle things if I were put in charge of the e.t.'s debut at the earthly ball.

Chaz Wilmot makes his living cranking out old-master parodies for ads and magazine covers. When he's offered a job restoring a Venetian palace fresco, he is at first, skeptical - he immediately sees it is more a forgery than a restoration. But he is soon seduced by the challenge and throws himself into the work, doing the job brilliantly.

recommended for artists!
Revisado: 01-02-11
I'm an artist in the NY area and I loved this book, particularly the spot-on descriptions of the Manhattan art scene. If you're a fan of timetravel stories and have even a passing interest in art, this book is for you. Great characters, well-written, kept me wondering but had a satisfying conclusion, and considering (literally) today's headlines about re-authenticating Velazquwz's portraits of young King Philip at Prada and The Met, quite timely.

Historia
A man lies half-drowned on a Cornish beach at dawn in the furthest days of this century. The old woman who discovers him, once a famous concert violinist, is close to death herself - or perhaps a new kind of life she can barely contemplate. Does death still exist at all, or has it finally been obliterated? And who is this strange man she's found? Is he a figure returned from her past, a new Messiah, or an empty vessel? God or the Devil?

excellent writing, characters, story
Revisado: 12-26-10
I highly recommend this book. Unlike much sci-fi or spec. fiction, this book is very well-written in terms of prose, as well as character development. Set in a very believable near-future, the events of worldwide upheaval lend a backdrop for the human drama of the main characters. I truly did not want to finish listening because I wanted the story to keep going!

What if you weren't who you thought you were, what others saw you to be? What if the structure of time depended on you to keep it steady? What if unseen forces, both good and evil, surrounded you, effecting your life in way's you could not begin to imagine? Well, if that were the case, you'd be Mark De Martel, unobtrusive advertising agent in Los Angeles.

interesting storyline, low production values
Revisado: 07-05-10
This book felt very much like a perfunctory first draft, perhaps of something that would be turned into a movie. The story is interesting, I cared about the characters only moderately, the writing and narraation by the author were lacking. Most annoyingly, the audio quality was not good, which did not add to the narration.

complex and intelligent
Revisado: 01-30-10
It took a little while to get into and sort out all of the characters and parallel storylines, however, it was worth it!
"Cryptonomicon" was long but the story was so complex that it seemed right (I even wanted the book to go on.)
Also, do not be intimidated by the math-y content of the book. The author does very well at describing complex number theory and cryptography in a way that is accessible.
I highly recomment this book.

It is an outfit so secret that only a handful of people know it exists, and some of those people have names like Churchill and Roosevelt. The mission of Watrehouse and Detachment 2702 - commanded by Marine Raider Bobby Shaftoe - is to keep the Nazis ignorant of the fact that Allied Intelligence has cracked the enemy's fabled Enigma code. In the present, Waterhouse's crypto-hacker grandson, Randy, is attempting to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia....

Historia
In a not-too-distant future that is not quite ours, there has been a major scientific breakthrough. It is a way to open windows into the past, permitting historical researchers to view, but not participate, in the events of the past.
In one of the most powerful and thought-provoking novels of his remarkable career, Orson Scott Card interweaves a compelling portrait of Christopher Columbus with the story of a future scientist who believes she can alter human history from a tragedy of bloodshed and brutality to a world filled with hope and healing.
