Historia
Across the country women are being murdered by a killer who leaves no evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no clues to a motive. They are, truly, perfect crimes. In fact, the only thing that links the victims is the man they all knew: Jack Reacher.

This entire thing was torture.
Revisado: 03-27-25
Child introduced Reacher in book 1 by telling us the best course of action is keeping your mouth shut, then set this entire book up by letting Reacher flap his gums in the middle of the most obvious setup I can think of.
And let's not forget that somehow the FBI hates his guts now, right after he saved a top agent and the president's goddaughter.
If you manage to make it to the end, you'll get the added bonus of the introduction of magic into the Reacher-verse. Yippy....

Extraordinary in every sense.
Revisado: 10-18-24
There were a few hiccups in the audio. It could have just been a bad download, though.
Rosamund Pike is the best thing to happen to these books. I've loved this epic for decades, but she makes it even more amazing, truly bringing it to life.
That very fact is a double-edged sword, however. It seems unlikely that she'll narrate the entire series, and now there's no way to switch to the other versions after hearing it done this well. The other versions are pale comparisons.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Terrible new (temporary) reader
Revisado: 12-19-23
I've been trying to find a polite, tactful way to say it, but much like our heroin, I think sometimes you just need to say it straight.
This new reader is terrible. How the hell can you narrate an urban fantasy novel and not know how to pronounce werewolf? Listening to characters talking about "we're"wolves for nearly 16 hours is torture.
The stupid pronunciation mistakes were compounded by the narrator's seeming need to rush through everything. There are several areas where they slur their words so much that I'm not certain they were sober.
Literally the only reason I'm willing to buy the next book in the series is that I checked and found that they switch back to Kimberly a few books down the road.

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Not bad at all
Revisado: 10-11-23
There are certainly issues with the story, mostly surrounding the author's apparent unfamiliarity with firearms. I was pretty surprised about the basic mistakes, such as throwing the word "automatic" around like everyone was packing uzis, but then seeing obvious research around tactics and strategy. Just a weird place to drop the ball.
The narrator is obviously old enough to be Jack's dad, but that didn't really bother me after about 5 minutes because the voice is pleasant to hear, and the story is pretty good.
Bottom line is that it's good enough that I'm buying book 2 now and I'm excited to do so.

Well done.
Revisado: 02-22-23
I've listened to the book twice before writing this review. Prior to purchasing it, I read most of its reviews.
Honestly, I'm deeply disappointed with many of the critical reviews, which, by-and-large seem to have been written by people with extremely unrealistic expectations.
I went looking for a source of information that covered as much of the history of these topics as possible, and that's exactly what I found here. It's a history book, exactly like what you'd expect to get on the first day of any History class in any school in America.
It spans nearly all of human civilization, which is precisely what you'd hope for in a history text on a topic that spans all of human civilization. Many reviews are critical of the fact that it doesn't do a "deep dive" into every topic, apparently without realizing that any document to attempt this would literally be too large for print in a single volume.
Some reviews are critical about repeated information, but this is exactly how it should be done. The text doesn't assume you've consumed and retained every word before it; it repeats keywords to be sure you understand the current topic and to mn lxh#aid in retention. Again, EXACTLY like any good history book would do.
There are even reviews criticizing the narrator's pronunciations. She's obviously Brittish, and they do pronounce some words differently over there, but she does an amazing job, especially on terms that have nothing to do with the English language. These criticisms feel much more like discrimination than critique.
The book isn't flawless, of course. Nothing is. Occasionally, it seemed like I could see a lack of deep understanding on a particular topic, but given that the text is not intended to delve deeply into individual topics, this didn't bother me.
This credit was well and enjoyably spent.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.
