Very Late Developing Plot With Subpar Ending
Revisado: 04-27-25
I bought this book when it was on discount from the daily sale. if I had paid full price or a credit, I would have felt cheated. This isn't an awful book, but it drags on with the badly explained subplot (which starts well before the actual plot) for hours with one character who is unlikeable and his prisoner who is annoying and well...full of rampaging hormones. Actually, the other main character is that way too. The main plot doesn't show up until very late in the book and then the book just...stops. Even books that are part of a series should have some resolution in each book. This book has none. I won't listen to any of the rest as the characters are uninteresting and the world building has me not caring what happens...when the author bothers to actually get to resolving anything. The narration is almost perfect. It would have been better with just one narrator though (and that being the one who can actually perform different voices).

All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

97% Less Scuds Would Have Been Great
Revisado: 12-27-23
I've listened to this book several times and each time there's just one thing that keeps it from being perfect: all the annoying scuds. I don't mind swear words in an audiobook if they have a place for them, but hearing the actual made-up-curse-word of "scud" about 200 times in this book and also the previous book (though not as much, thankfully) was enough to make me nauseous. Everything else about the book and especially the narration was great though.

After Book 3, I'm in no rush to listen to Book 4
Revisado: 09-11-23
First off, the narration was great just like in Books 1 and 2. The story is very weak though and meanders way, way too much around pointless backstory of multiple characters, including villains. The epilogue was another contrived plot twist as was an earlier chapter that went over a bad guy's life as a kid. These should have been left out of the book and more story of the main characters should have been used instead. The pacing of the entire book was at times too rushed in the good parts and then too slow in the bad (the "Everglades" sections). Aldo- spoiler alert - one of the characters rescued in Book 2 is just carelessly done away with in this book. Since a likeable female character was killed in Book 2 as well AND the worst villains in the book are actually women, I'm starting to wonder if the author is trying to make a statement. I might listen to Book 4, but I'll wait until it's on sale by 70 to 80%. I no longer have much care what happens to the characters after the mostly pointless Book 3.

Lennox's temper and yelling is getting tiresome
Revisado: 06-10-23
I've listened to all the books up to this point and while the narration is excellent, the story is a little weak with lots of "We need more information" rants by the two main characters. Lennox and Swift are...to put it kindly...major, unlikeable jerks. Swift is for some reason obsessed with the law and impressing officials in his former profession to where it's just silly and still unexplained after several books since he stopped being an Inspector. Lennox is yelling a lot in this book, angry at people who could and should just throw him out when he starts raving and interfering. I like the books okay because it gives me something to listen to, but Lennox's wife needs to divorce him (as he's absent a lot) and he needs to go to a sanitarium. Or maybe just stop with the outbursts in every book (it doesn't help that the narrator gave him so deep a voice...its grating when angry). Swift needs to go back to being an Inspector rather than pretending. The story ofherwise is okay, alb÷eit the whodunit and why part is a tad contrived and unsatisfactory compared to some of the previous books. 3.5 overall...though I will round it to a 4.

Happy ending!...Except one person died
Revisado: 02-16-23
The presenter of this podcast said human error was ruled as not being at fault...except it was. The de-icing mechanism was erroneously put together and the garbled-sounding PA system in the cabin likely led to one person dying. Unless all that was due to one or more persons purposefully sabotaging those systems, it was human error. The presenters of the podcast should have said no PILOT error. It's not until less than 6 minutes left that there's a second mention of the passenger who tragically died. No mention is made of what happened to the other passengers - some of whom also acted heroically. And there's a Charles Lindbergh society giving out awards? He was a Nazi sympathizer (Google his 1941 speech- it's awful)...the award should have been left off the podcast. This wasn't one of their best episodes as it's short on story and full of too many platitudes - someone died and people have/had burn scars and emotional scars for life.

Interviews/Clips not best way to deliver the story
Revisado: 12-31-22
The host has an odd speaking style (short, staggered) and I don't think I could listen to an hour of that, but still would have preferred it over the constant interruptions for news clips and interviews. The story gets told, but it has a slanted view in how it's told since it's not a researcher telling the story but the people involved or those who have an interest in their viewpoint being accepted.

Bong! Seconds or minutes later....Bong!
Revisado: 12-26-22
I haven't been listening to this podcast series long and I'm listening to them out of order (skipping some episodes I have no interest in or which I know the story of already). I like this series and the impromptu style of the host. Also, it's great that she's hosting on her own. The multi-host shows are almost always awful in structure where the main point of the series fails to be delivered. In this particular episode, there's a weird, annoying and unexplained bong sound (like someone hitting a barrel with a bat in another room or something) that repeats intermittently. Apart from that, this is an entertaining listen and the host has a nice voice to listen to (she keeps her levels fine...the bong is about the same volume level).

Lower mic volume of co-host not telling the story)
Revisado: 12-22-22
The story is good and so is the overall discussion, but the second host's mic is too loud while the main host's mic is further away. The 2nd host also says too many "Uh-ohs, whats?!, wows, woahs and uhhhs". They're distracting and unnecessary - especially when they drown out the main host t telling the story. Still a good listen, but not with headphones or earbuds.

Good, but the psychology is wrong
Revisado: 12-22-22
At just over the 39 minute mark, the main host of this episode mentions the term sociopath, but gives the wrong definition. A sociopath is someone who is capable of feeling remorse or empathy and perhaps just can't control their reckless behavior. The host said sociopath, but was meaning to refer to a psychopath as they are unrepentant and unremorseful (evil by their own choosing).
