Did Tana French even write this series? Such a huge drop off in quality from her previous work. couldn't even finish this one.

One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

A pretty weak entry to the Stephenson oeuvre
Revisado: 11-23-21
OK they can’t all be home runs, I know. This just had a fairly boring story and not much action or science. Kind of a political thriller without the thrilling part. The b story about the Indian guy in the Himalayan mountains was particularly uninteresting and silly.

This is good
Revisado: 09-13-21
I’ve tried a lot of different language instruction. This is one of the best. The author’s voice is very pleasant to listen to as well, which really helps.
No matter what though, to learn a new language, you really have to put the time in. They say about 90% who try to become fluent in a 2nd language fail. I can definitely believe that.

Historia
A Manual for Cleaning Women compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia Berlin. With the grit of Raymond Carver, the humor of Grace Paley, and a blend of wit and melancholy all her own, Berlin crafts miracles from the everyday, uncovering moments of grace in the laundromats and halfway houses of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Bay Area upper class, among switchboard operators and struggling mothers, hitchhikers, and bad Christians.

Good book. Lousy packaging.
Revisado: 03-23-21
OK fantastic stories. That’s the most important thing.
However I am perplexed to find that the multi billion dollar company behind the distribution of this audiobook is so understaffed that they are not able to provide a list of the NAMES OF THE INDIVIDUAL STORIES. Instead you get only this: chapter 1, chapter 2, Etc. Come on.
Perhaps this is the fault of the publisher? Either way, it shows no respect for the writer or the listener. Do better with your billions Amazon.

Not very good.
Revisado: 12-31-20
I loved North Water so I was really looking forward to this one.
It is OK. But not even close to as well written and cleverly plotted as North Water. The narration in Irish is good. But when the narrator switches to some weird Long Island/Brooklyn accent for one of the main characters it is kind of cringy.
The bar was set high by North Water. This one is not ven close. Some authors only have one great book in them.

How do you release a collection of Novellas without giving the listeners some way of navigating through the individual titles? So incredibly lazy of whomever was responsible for releasing this title. Give me a break.

Historia
A psychologist in suburban Cleveland, Dustin is drifting through his forties when he hears the news: His adopted brother, Rusty, is being released from prison. Thirty years ago, Rusty received a life sentence for the massacre of Dustin’s parents, aunt, and uncle. The trial came to epitomize the 1980s hysteria over Satanic cults; despite the lack of physical evidence, the jury believed the outlandish accusations Dustin and his cousin made against Rusty. Now, after DNA analysis has overturned the conviction, Dustin braces for a reckoning.

A dark and powerful book.
Revisado: 06-19-19
This is an excellent book. Dark yes. Depressing sure. However, all the reviews claiming the ending is unresolved and/or confusing are completely missing the point.
Unless you demand simple plots and cliched endings, ignore the negative reviews and enjoy this complex, disturbing, original work.
