Historia
In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger. When she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

Exceptional narration, story a tad too long & extra
Revisado: 04-13-25
I've listened to a lot of audio books and I have a high bar for narration quality. I will just drop it if I can't get into the narration after a couple of hours. Sandra Oh did an incredible job at bringing the dialogue to life. Super easy to listen to and I hope she makes a side gig out of this.
I loved the story for about 66% of the way through. I don't want to leave spoilers, but it was at the first major tragedy to happen in the late 70s that I felt like things were a little forced and rushed... or like it was dragging on and there was tragedy for the sake of tragedy. I felt like it could've ended around then. The rest was good, but I enjoyed the first 2/3 much more.

Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: Why don’t you swallow broken glass. High above Manhattan, a greater crime is committed: Alkaitis's billion-dollar business is really nothing more than a game of smoke and mirrors.

spoilers- great for about 2/3
Revisado: 02-22-23
I was worried about Dylan Moore at first because her narration in Sea of Tranquility was super monotone and boring, but it was actually amazing. Easy to listen to, but don't make her do an Australian accent again.
The story was intriguing and kept me captivated for most of it but about 2/3 of the way through we get the entire recap of literally Bernie Madoff. Jonathan is not just a "Bernie Madoff character". He IS him. Slight adjustments were made to keep Vincent in the picture but otherwise the entire portion of his downfall was a copy/paste. Felt like a way to fill pages, and I don't know if it actually impacted the overall story.
I also wasn't impressed with Vincent's ghost walk at the end. Felt cheesy. I think we all could've gotten the synchronicity of her having an accident on a boat like her mother without all of that.
overall though, no regrets.

A fabulous tale that took me for a ride
Revisado: 01-24-23
I'll never hear the word "object" the same again. This story is magical, beautiful, sad, and informational. I love the monologs about Earth's history, or detailed information about the makeup of an earthworm. There are some very graphic sex scenes, but they fit this tale so perfectly. I am so pleased to have listened to this book.
The narrations were all amazing. Each narrator fit their role so well, especially the "main" narrator. I drank in her every word.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

For such a heart felt story... Meh was my reaction
Revisado: 01-10-23
The story itself, albeit nice, was just okay. If you're looking for a serious mystery, you won't get it here. It's extremely predictable. Then it just gets painfully predictable. I also really thought there'd be more octopus. Like other reviews, he was my favorite part, but that is a very small aspect of this story.
Overall a very nice story though.

good story & EXCELLENT narration
Revisado: 12-21-22
I really enjoyed this series. It's well rounded and paces well. Some of it is a bit predictable, but it's still a very nice story. I loved the narration. It's dynamic and adds style to every character.

Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

Characters with depth with a well rounded tale
Revisado: 03-09-19
I love books like this. I love even more that Maguire narrated the story. I didn't realize it until the end when he was being interviewed. The imagination in this series is profound. The characters have depth and challenge the preconceived ideas we've always had for the witch and her family.

Hearty fantasy
Revisado: 09-05-18
I can't believe it's taken me this long to read this series. I'm a seasoned fantasy reader and, since I'm deeply involved in a scifi series right now, decided to get the audio books for Wizard of Earthsea. So far, the story and character development is reminding me of Dark Tower. It was so satisfying to see our main character from the first book meet the main character from the second. Gave me a chance to get to know the Atuan Priestess.
This is good, solid, hearty fantasy.. Not too much fancy magic, and slight hints to metaphors.

Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Great spin on a classic
Revisado: 07-22-18
I've always loved Greek mythology and read The Iliad and The Odyssey at an early age. I hope Miller keeps writing these great spins on these classics. It's so fun to learn more about the personalities and back stories of the characters we don't hear as much about in the big stories. I found myself Googling a lot of things and loved how much I learned about Greek mythology. Beautifully written, never wanted to stop reading/listening, and the narration nailed it. I've had some audio books where I couldn't finish because of the narrator and Frazer had the perfect tone. Wish I could start it all over again. Circe was equally entrancing.
