Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Cathartic for survivors
Revisado: 08-13-22
This is the first audiobook I have listened to entirely in one day. Jennette’s memoir is both illustrative and insightful- I laughed, I gasped, I cried. Forget about the rumors you have heard about her decision to leave television. This is a story that deserves to be heard here. On a personal level, it has led me to reflect on my own destructive habits, as well as parenting decisions. I hope she continues to write.

Historia
Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense nonprofit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one.

What did I just read?
Revisado: 09-22-21
Miranda July is fantastic at crafting intriguing prose, and this is no exception. For the first half of this novel, I laughed quite a bit, and the characters were relatable- to an extent. That being said, this novel is the most excellent book I will probably never recommend to anyone. I am by no means prudish or give a darn about literature being “problematic,” but a large chunk of the narrative revolves around professional adults graphically taking advantage of a young minor with only one single rebuke from the victim at the end, which is presented as almost irrelevant and inconsequential. I felt gross as it ended and I realized that the neurotic protagonist learned or grew very little and hopped into the sack with the most unappealing love interest ever created, having recently discarded their significantly younger partners for different reasons. I dunno- I found myself asking myself what the point was. I’m still not sure. Yes, these things happen in real life. But if The First Bad Man has any sort of underlying message or concern for people who have ever found themselves in similar situations, I fail to see it.

Hilarious

Honestly, I put this podcast on when I needed a break from all the depressing true crime I'd been binging over the last year. The voice acting is incredible, the pacing of the story is on-point, A surprisingly light-hearted story for a tale where characters refer to a "chainsaw room" and "contract kill" jobs with the same nonchalance they might order an Uber. This is the best thing I've listened to all year. Now I'm just sad that it's over,

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Self-help for bros
Revisado: 06-13-20
I’m a fan of Mark Manson’s blog writing, and was excited to listen to his wisdom in full novel format. While he serves up some noteworthy platitudes, this feels more geared toward people without any genuine problems in their life- not to say him and his readers problems are not real or valid, but it’s not useful for everyone. If you’re someone whose greatest anxieties revolve around feeling sad you aren’t famous or dating a supermodel yet, you may enjoy his advice to get uncomfortable and put more effort into your life. If you’re literally struggling to survive, facing PTSD, or your struggles involve a mountain of things you have to give a fuck about in order to keep your family alive, his attitude can come across as condescending and privileged. It may make you feel even more discouraged. We can’t all quit our job and crowd surf to start a blog or move to another country, Mark.
