Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - what percentage of the world's population live in poverty; why the world's population is increasing; how many girls finish school - we systematically get the answers wrong. In Factfulness, professor of international health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two longtime collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens.

Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

An Extremely Interesting Story About Drugs
Revisado: 03-07-25
This really helped me understand how drugs are developed, the big drug companies, the use and abuse of drugs and how drugs are changing. I learned about a couple of drugs that I have been prescribed and their side effects, even though my pharmacy always prints out several pages of warnings. I never find time to read those and it's hard to get past a few sentences anyway. I learned that I've been taking statins for high cholesterol and probably don't need to, so I'll be discussing that with my doctor because I am experiencing some of the side effects that they spoke of in this book. I really liked this book and have recommended it to friends.

I stuck with it all the way to the end, Even though it was the same blood, guts and death over and over and over again. It actually took me almost a month to finish it. I guess it gave preppers things to think about but it also gave a lot of other things I'd rather die than think about. I know now, that I won't be hanging around to see Armageddon.

It all begins with a hot-air-balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they’re not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined the captain of the ship would be harboring a suitcase full of contraband uranium on a nuclear-weapons mission for Kim Jong-un. Yikes! Soon Allan and Julius are at the center of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump.

Annoying references to American politics
Revisado: 11-03-24
Like egotistical Hollywood actors who get full of themselves and think they can dictate American politics, this author, who I have enjoyed in the past, takes gross liberties, thinking he knows American politics and politicians. The story was typical of the last one of his 100 year old man stories that I read and it was cute and interesting except for his continuous attacks on Donald Trump, based on what he's read in the Washington Post and heard on CNN, two utterly incredulous and politically biased news organizations. I wish talented people would stick to their craft and mind their own business when it comes to thinking they need to influence others, especially the degenerates in Hollywood. Please don't label me as a Trumper. I personally think he's a crappy politician. I wouldn't even choose him to be in my circle of friends. But that's why I voted for him. I voted for a businessman that I believed could rescue our economy. I don't own a MAGA hat and I personally believe that Washington DC, politicians, and our media are so corrupt that America will never be great again. Label me a pessimist.

Historia
Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner. Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Melodrama at it's finest.
Revisado: 03-03-24
Some of this hit a little too close to my own crazy family, but I finished it thinking in some regards my family wasn't near as bad. on the other hand, I've dealt with alcoholism and drug addiction which this story barely scratched the surface of. I found myself annoyed at characters in this story, that should have known that anger, resentment, and grudges don't have any good use and that they'd never be happy without letting go and forgiving. It took this author way too long and a few too many characters, to get to that point.

The readers were great.
Revisado: 02-29-24
The story was a bit cliche about a dedicated cop, perfect dad to 10 adopted kids, with a dying wife. The bad guys were clever but not clever enough. The storyline is moderately incredible but entertaining. My only complaint was that the main body and action of the story built for hours up to culminating in the bad guys getting away with their crime but then it felt like in the last 5 minutes the good guy miraculously prevails.

Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

If you're squeamish about blood, guts and detached body parts, this isn't for you. Neither would you make a good ME. But somebody has to do the work and Barbara Butcher graphically illustrates the toll the job takes on the human psyche.

I've been burned out until now.
Revisado: 11-26-23
I've been an audible member for many years. I used to run through my credit and most the free stuff and even buy more credits. My favorite old authors hadn't done anything new lately and I had made some bad choices with my credits. I was ready to quit audible. Then I saw this new Scalzi. I loved this book. It was a little complicated tracking the plot twists and who were the good and bad guys and it was a wee bit incredulous - but it's fiction and humorous. I love Scalzi's wit and sarcasm. I listened to this while doing Thanksgiving baking and enjoyed it more than my Thanksgiving, sad to say. I guess I'll keep my membership awhile longer.
