Historia
With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

Story is the best, narrator, not so much
Revisado: 02-21-25
I've always loved the Anne of Green Gables books and movie!! It's a classic right up there with all of the best. This was not the right narrator for the audiobook, though. I would listen to this 100 times over if a better narrator had been used. I'm not sure why she thought that Anne should have a breathy voice, but it was very awkward. Maybe it was her first job? I can't help but be disappointed.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

EXCELLENT BACKSTORY
Revisado: 01-12-25
For anyone who is interested in learning more about the vice president of the United States, this is a must read.
For anyone wanting to learn more about average hillbilly families, this is a great read.
For anyone who is concerned about the "less fortunate" in our country and would like to understand what might be helpful, this is a good place to start.
It's a huge bonus that JD narrated his own book. I laughed, I cried, and I came away with a deeper understanding of our VP as well as a cross section of our brothers and sisters in the US.
I highly recommend this book.

Sad story well told
Revisado: 12-15-24
Life is so unfair, and this case is no different. A kind, compassionate, and loving man was robbed of his life by someone he truly loved. My heart breaks for him and goes out to his children.
This is one of my favorite true crime channels. I'm sorry to hear about your health struggles and wish you nothing but the best.

Decent short story

If you'd like to listen to something fairly entertaining where there's little chance of guessing the ending, this might be worth a try.
I couldn't help but be a little annoyed by the way the narrator sometimes spoke in a really nasaly way. lol.

Ryan and Sophie are a golden couple in Melbourne, the charming, salt-of-the-earth country boy and the charismatic, gorgeous social butterfly. When Ryan’s father dies, leaving them the family farm, it seems like a chance for Ryan to get back to his roots and for Sophie to embrace the bucolic country life she always dreamed of. But reality proves very different, and years spent struggling against an implacable drought have pushed their marriage – and finances – to the absolute limit.

Pretty good
Revisado: 11-24-24
If you aren't super picky, this is worth a listen. There wasn't enough time to totally develop the characters, but they were definitely not flat. At least they were all unique and not cookie cutter.
There are always silly parts to almost every book, but I didn't give up on this one. With a polishing, it could be a good movie.
The narrators were pretty good. The male was excellent, and the female will probably just get better over time.

Historia
Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner. Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

Tragic and powerful
Revisado: 10-20-24
I'm disturbed, disgusted, and angry after listening to this tragic story of innocent children being abused. The utter cruelty of the adults involved in the "hospital" is alarming. The family members get absolutely no grace from me, including Barbara's father.
I just wanted to go back in time and take all of the children home with me and shower them with the love and kindness that they all deserved.
There is one key reason to read a book like this - to expose the wrong done to so many children and hold people accountable. I only wish that the "doctor" was still alive. He was a totally despicable human being.
I hope that others who have had similar experiences will find validation and some amount of healing through this amazing book. Connecting with others who understand can be very valuable.

Historia
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Overly descriptive writing
Revisado: 07-06-24
I just can't stomach this type of writing. I'm only 10 minutes in, and have rolled my eyes too many times to want to continue listening. The author tries to be far too "creative" in the description of every single thing. Sorry, it's not for me.

Poor narration
Revisado: 04-25-24
I am a full-blown true crime enthusiastic and really would have enjoyed this book if it weren't for one thing: the narration. His backstory along with all of the cases were interesting, but my ears just can't handle the constant frog in the throat and pretty severe lisp. I don't mean that as an insult. Some of us are just more sensitive to sounds than others. I found the narration so distracting that I couldn't even focus on the story. I only got through a few chapters.

Historia
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

Not believable
Revisado: 03-13-24
This could have been a good story, but the main character makes the dumbest decisions, especially considering the seriousness of the situation. It's kind of like the characters in a horror film who walk alone on a dark night, open the door to strangers, go down into the basement, etc.
Not only that, she's not very kind to others, yet she's surrounded by people who go out of their way to do anything for her.
I've enjoyed some of KL Slater's books, but they seem to be hit or miss. This was a miss.

Historia
In Murder Gets a Life, middle-aged sisters Mary Alice and Patricia Ann are sleuthing their way through a mystery that is hotter than Alabama in August. Mary Alice’s son has married Sunshine, a petite blond who is cute as a button. Her family, however, lives in a junk-filled trailer compound dotted with rusty engines and pit bulls. When Mary Alice and Patricia Ann pay a call on the family, the sisters hardly have time to meet Sunshine’s spirit-channeling grandmother before they stumble over a large corpse on her floor. The local sheriff just can’t seem to get moving in the summer heat.

GREAT Series!!!
Revisado: 03-05-24
I am really enjoying this series!! The narrator is absolutely believable and adds SO much to the stories. I feel like I know the characters. I've been captivated by each story so far and am already looking forward to the next one. They're easy to follow, have plenty of humor, and are so entertaining.
I think readers who are from small towns, are middle aged (like I am), or enjoy more of a "clean" story would especially like this series.
