I used to enjoy Jack Reacher novels, but the emphasis on sex and violence, the overlong scenes, tedious writing and Dick Hill's lame voice just grossed me out on revisiting

Historia
A new translation of Georges Simenon's sensational tale of deceit and back-stabbing in an isolated community, part of the new Maigret series. Maigret has been interrogating Carl Andersen for 17 hours without a confession. He's either innocent or a very good liar. So why was the body of a diamond merchant found at his isolated mansion? Why is his sister always shut away in her room? And why does everyone at Three Widows Crossroads have something to hide?

Great narrative performance
Revisado: 11-03-18
Simenon is a real writer, not just a factory foreman, and Gareth Armstrong breathes real life into an amazing variety if characters. In my opinion and experience, his Maigret is authoritative.

The story leads you through a thicket of passionate and conflicting relationships and personalities like a ship through a storm at sea, then takes you into port where life goes on as it should. Very satisfying and cathartic.

Historia
Phoebe Wycherly was missing two months before her wealthy father hired Archer to find her. That was plenty of time for a young girl who wanted to disappear to do so thoroughly—or for someone to make her disappear. And before he could locate the Wycherly girl, Archer had to reckon with the Wycherly woman, Phoebe’s mother, an eerily unmaternal blonde who kept too many residences, had too many secrets, and left too many corpses in her wake.

Hard boiled to the core
Revisado: 09-09-16
Lew Archer, identical in my mind with the voice of Mr. Gardner, is a real man. He's honest, he can take a punch and hit back, he goes where the trail leads--and makes sure someone 's paying him to do it. And that's a good thing, considering that the trail twists and winds and doubles back through danger, broken lives, post-ww2 Southern California, rich and poor, good and evil and through surprising passages of remarkable poetry. Pay attention, though, Ross MacDonald always packs a doppelganger or two.

Historia
This monumental work made the Arthurian cycle available for the first time in English. Arthur is conceived and taken away in secret, returning as a young man to claim the throne by pulling the sword Excalibur from the stone. In retelling the story of Arthur's rule of Britain, Malory intertwines the romances of Guinevere and Launcelot, Tristram and Isolde, and Launcelot and Elaine. Sir Galahad's appearance at Camelot begins the quest for the Holy Grail.

Brilliant narration
Revisado: 08-29-16
The written text of Le Morte D'Arthur is challenging since many words, usages and spellings are unfamiliar in modern English. Fredrick Davidson reads with such intelligence, understanding and (it seems) heartfelt appreciation of the characters, their stories and the times that any difficulty of comprehension is eliminated. Also, the work itself is orich and fascinating, full of battles, adventures, sexual and political intrigue

Historia
When reclusive war poet Olivia Marlowe and her half-brother, Nicholas Cheney, die together in their ancestral home on the Cornish coast, it looks like suicide. The grieving relatives gather together to discuss the fate of Barcombe Hall, when another shocking death occurs. Inspector Rutledge, who is still shell-shocked from his experiences in the Great War, is sent from Scotland Yard to investigate. Rutledge is soon convinced that the answers to this baffling case lie within the family’s secret history.

Historia
George Simenon's devastating tale of misfortune, betrayal and the weakness of family ties, translated by Anthea Bell. Instead of the detail filling itself in and becoming clearer, it seemed to escape him. The face of the man in the ill-fitting coat just misted up so that it hardly looked human. In theory this mental portrait was good enough, but now it was replaced by fleeting images which should have added up to one and the same man but which refused to get themselves into focus.

Historia
Originally published in six volumes, which sold more than one million copies, Carl Sandburg’s Abraham Lincoln was praised as the most noteworthy historical biography of Sandburg’s generation. He later distilled this monumental work into one volume that critics and readers alike consider his greatest work of nonfiction, as well as the most distinguished, authoritative biography of Lincoln ever published.
Growing up in an Illinois prairie town, Sandburg listened to stories of old-timers who had known Lincoln. By the time this single-volume edition was competed, he had spent a lifetime studying, researching, and writing about our 16th president.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 06-08-16
This is by far and away the best biography I have ever read. It is not in the least smarmy-the principal failing of most biographies I've read. It presents a wealth of fact, largely leaving it to the reader to draw their own conclusions. The facts often cast Lincoln in a bad light, but this only contributes weight and substance to the portrait of a very great man. And that is the book's principal merit, it reveals in its fullness, with poetry and pathos, the astonishing genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Originally published in 1938, Graham Greene’s chilling exposé of violence and gang warfare is a masterpiece of psychological realism and often considered Graham Greene’s best novel. It is a fascinating study of evil, sin, and the “appalling strangeness of the mercy of God,” a classic of its kind.

Historia
After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre was hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane was pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room. But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor.

This is a fine presentation of a great novel. The characters and the twists and turns of the story come brilliantly alive. This has long been one of my favorite books and I like it even better after taking in the audiobook.
