Not bad, worth a listen.

This was the first in a series and several times during the book I thought I wouldn’t go on to more. Too corny to n places, nothing especially riveting. But in the end it was very enjoyable and I probably will try another one in the series.

You get what you paid for - a story just complex enough to stimulate without the crazy tangents some authors overdo. The well defined characters that get you attached and make you glad there’s a sequel waiting for you. And a low key, ear-friendly narrator. A few slips into, like, idk, corniness? But if you want zero percent of that, read Lawrence Block ( one of my all time favorites.) But some good, thorny questions are raised about the justice system, killers, family influence on later behavior, and more. This is a great listen and I’m eagerly starting the next in the series once I hit submit. :)

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

Gave it 5 stars not because it was deep or profound in anyway but because it’s a great offering from the world of gritty, old school, noir detective fiction. Enjoy.

Unbelievably good.
Revisado: 03-31-23
This piece of work is unbelievable. The characters are so rich and developed and nuanced i am in awe. The story is gripping. The storytelling immediately grabbed me, but there was a point in the first part where I was feeling overloaded by character profiles and background stories and almost moved to a different book. I am SO glad I didn’t. If you get that feeling at some point just stay with it. I am just so impressed by this writing. And as far as far as the narrator, Dion Graham, well the only reason I found this book was because I was searching out every book he ever narrated because he is the GOAT.

Historia
Matthew Scudder knows that justice is an elusive commodity in the big city, where a harmless man can be shot dead in a public place criminals fly free through holes in a tattered legal system. But now a vigilante is roaming among the millions, executing those he fees deserve to die. He calls himself "The Will of the People"—an ingenious serial killer who announces his specific murderous intentions to the media before carrying through on his threats.

Outstanding.
Revisado: 01-02-23
I love all the Skudder books but this one is extra good. I thought the subplot about the life insurance deal was unnecessary but it was interesting and didn’t really mess up the flow. The main story was excellent, and well performed by Hammer. I’m not crazy about how he voices TJ’s dialect. The only reader that seems to do it with any real nuance is Block, when he himself narrates. But Hammer does okay here, and the whole TJ storyline is a wonderful aspect of the book. Hammer does an incredible job with the several other distinctive characters, adding a level of character and personality that really elevates the experience. Of course the writing of the dialogue makes that possible. It’s amazing how good Block is, so consistently. Highly recommended.

Another outstanding Scudder story. Excellent plot, great character development. It just sucks that this reader voiced CJ using the clumsiest, cheap, reductive black accent imaginable. Hard to listen to it but I wanted to finish the book. I love TJ, and I’ve heard him and other black characters voiced so much better by other readers. Come to think of it, Hammer does at least one other black character in this book, with nuance and grace. I guess he thinks because TJ comes from the street his only choice for dialect was the one black characters used — as parody — in the old blacksploitation movies, like Shaft. Sigh. Anyway, this is otherwise another great audio book by LB.

Historia
An ancient brotherhood meets annually in the back room of a swank Manhattan restaurant, a fraternity created in secret to celebrate life by celebrating its dead. But the past three decades have not been kind to the Club of 31. Matthew Scudder - ex-cop and ex-boozer - has known death in all its guises, which is why he has been asked to investigate a baffling thirty-year run of suicides and suspiciously random accidents that has thinned the ranks of this very select group of gentlemen.

Revisado: 07-07-22
This was a good book, worth buying. The writing in general is well above average, and some passages are excellent. The story is intriguing, and kept my attention, but at times it almost seemed like two or three different stories. That can work as an approach but has to be done really well to make it a good challenge to piece together, rather than frustrating. Overall very good and glad I chose it.

Not the best of the Barbara Holloway series. Way too long of a set up story, too many slightly similar characters, pretty improbable conclusion. But still good moments and a will keep on with the series because some have been outstanding.
